Neighboring the OKC highways
Tucked into the bend of Interstate 44 and just 4 miles from Will Rogers World Airport are three Oklahoma City communities: John Glenn #1, John Glenn #2, and South West 60th. The eclectic mix of homes here share space with low-rise apartments and Oklahoma City Community College’s Family and Community Education (FACE) Center. They’re also next-door neighbors with Will Rogers World Airport. With big box shopping centers miles away down Interstate 240, they get modern convenience from the Modern Frontier city.
1960’s-era homes
Ranch-style homes, craftsman bungalows, and the occasional split-level home line the streets closer to I-44. Roads end abruptly at the noise barrier running parallel to the interstate; power lines run throughout the neighborhood against the vast Oklahoma sky. Short concrete driveways lead past metal fences towards worn roads, and residents choose their own ways to protect their vehicles (carports) or their lawns (stone or brick borders against the road).
As drivers make their way east into the South West 60th neighborhood, yards become more uniform, as do the homes – remodeled brick ranch-styles with 2-car garages, Cape Cods, and cottages with prominent gables and front porches littered with decorations during the holidays can be found here. Almost all homes in both John Glenn and South West 60th were built in the early 1960s, and prices are scattered between $130,000 to $215,000.

Syl Goldman Park and golf greens
Residents walk the paved mile-long trail at Syl Goldman Park just north of John Glenn; a small playground and grassy fields make this the de facto neighborhood park. Meanwhile, members can play a round on the private golf greens at Hidden Trails Country Club, which lie just 1.5 miles east of South West 60th.
A centrally-located southside neighborhood
While sidewalks are spotty, John Glenn and South West 60th residents will still see families and students walking to class at the Oklahoma City Community College FACE Center. Most residents own their own vehicles; Embark bus stops lining South May Avenue provide an alternate way to get around OKC.
Interstate 44 merges with Interstate 240 just below the neighborhood. Residents can take the former to get to downtown OKC in 9.5 miles, and the latter to reach Oklahoma Heart Hospital South in 10 miles. They can take Southwest 54th Street to get to Will Rogers World Airport in just 4 miles.
Passing traffic and OKC’s industry boost
Because of its proximity to the airport and to two major highways, noise pollution is a reality for residents living in John Glenn or South West 60th. Meanwhile, Amazon’s two new OKC Fulfillment Centers sit just 3 miles south on I-44. These industry additions create more jobs in the city, as well as more traffic in the region.
