On the cusp of OKC and small-town Yukon

With the sparkling waters of its namesake lake to the east, historic Route 66 to the north and Interstate 40 to the south, residents of the Lake Overholser area couldn't ask for a better spot in Oklahoma City to call home. According to Cheryl Gruntmeir, a Realtor with Gable & Grace Real Estate and RR Homes who sells homes in both OKC and nearby Yukon, Lake Overholser perfectly splits the difference between the two. "You're within an easy commute of the city, but you also have the small-town feel of Yukon,” she says. With a top-notch school system, restaurants and retail a stone’s throw away and outdoor fun practically on residents’ doorsteps, it's no surprise that new homes have been cropping up as folks flock to Lake Overholser.

Established ranch-style homes and newly built subdivisions

Homebuyers looking to live in the Lake Overholser neighborhood will find a blend of new and old subdivisions. Established communities tend to have slightly larger lots with plenty of mature trees and room to store a boat or RV, while more recent developments tend to have neat sidewalks with homes perched close together. Though there are plenty of 1970s and ‘80s ranch-style houses in the area, new constructions tend to be brick Traditional-style houses that come in one- or two-story floor plans. Homes range from modest 1,000 square-foot three-bedrooms starting at $180,000 to 2,000 square-footers with four bedrooms that can list for up to $400,000. At $250,000, the median price for this neighborhood is enough to purchase a newly built three-bedroom home with an open layout and a fenced-in backyard.

Waterfront recreation and a sprawling Route 66-themed park

With the neighborhood’s namesake lake nearby, outdoor fun is always close at hand. On the lake's south shore, residents can stroll across the over 100-year-old dam, cast a line from the fishing pier or observe the abundant wildlife that calls the lake home, from turtles to egrets. Along the eastern bank, Route 66 Park is impossible to miss, thanks to its vintage signs that pay homage to the Mother Road. The park’s 148 acres of green space includes more than just the usual park facilities like playgrounds and pavilions, as it’s also home to three ponds with boardwalks through the wetlands. Residents can lace up their roller skates or grab their skateboards to practice their moves at the skate park or enjoy stunning bird’s-eye views from the top of the Cyrus Avery Observation Tower.

Zoned to high-scoring Yukon Public Schools

Students can attend schools in the highly rated Yukon Public Schools district. Youngsters start off at Shedeck Elementary through the third grade before rounding out their primary school education at Independence Intermediate for grades four through six. The former scores a B-minus from Niche, while the latter earns an A-minus. Yukon Middle receives a B-plus, and Yukon High is awarded a B grade. The high school ranks highly for college readiness, with the option for students to complete an internship in place of an elective.

Local restaurants and name-brand shopping nearby

Retail and restaurants tend to cluster around the major roads nearby, such as Route 66 and Interstate 40, meaning residents don’t have to go far for their everyday needs. Locals grab groceries at the Walmart Neighborhood Market along Route 66, roughly 10 minutes north. Just another mile west, residents can dine local at Yukon establishments like Green Chile Kitchen. Folks rave about the restaurant's New Mexican-inspired dishes, like the green chile queso and carne adovada smothered burrito. The Flower Shop Winery & Pizzeria is another popular spot for its house-made wines and from-scratch pizzas served in a 50-year-old converted flower shop that hosts live music on its patio. "It's such a cute place," Gruntmeir says. "Everybody's talking about that one." Residents are also a quick trip away from the OKC Outlets, situated about 10 minutes east, where shopaholics can get their fill from over 80 brand-name stores, like Coach and J. Crew Factory.

At the crossroads of multiple major highways

With Route 66, Interstate 40 and the Kilpatrick Turnpike all bordering the neighborhood, residents of Lake Overholser have no trouble getting around. Although homeowners need a vehicle to get around in this car-dependent neighborhood, both downtown OKC and Will Rogers World Airport are approximately 20 minutes away. Emergency care is even closer, with Integris Health Canadian Valley Hospital roughly 4 miles to the west.
