Peaceful, near-lakefront living
Lakehurst lies between the bustling North May Avenue shopping and dining corridor and Lake Hefner, less than 2 miles west of one of Oklahoma City’s most sought-after enclave cities, Nichols Hills. “It’s a quiet area, and really centrally located. There are a bunch of shops and things to do off of May, and it’s got the easiest commute because it’s not that far from the highway,” she says, referring to the Lake Hefner Parkway, which runs between the lake and the grid-patterned residential streets. There are both townhomes and traditional single-family homes on spacious lots available in Lakehurst. “It’s more of a suburban feel in an urban area,” says Kaiser, adding that many of the 1960s and ‘70s-era homes feature updated interiors and have been very well maintained.
Nichols Hills vibes, OKC prices
Prices run from $135,000 for two-bedroom townhomes to more than $620,000 for four-bedroom standalone ranch-style homes. “Most of Lakehurst is made up of larger, standalone homes; the townhomes are kind of an anomaly. They’re also a pretty good value for the area, especially in this location,” says Kaiser. “Even the standalone homes are good value because it’s pretty close to Nichols Hills, so you have the great location without having to pay the higher tax bracket. It’s a nice place for people who want to buy in Nichols Hills someday but maybe can’t quite afford it yet, since these houses cost around fifty to a hundred dollars a square foot less for very similar styles.”
Lake Hefner
The lake less than a mile west is one of the most popular spots for outdoor recreation in the city, let alone in Lakehurst. The waterfront is circled by nearly 10 miles of paved, multiuse trails. At Bluff Creek Park, on the north shore, there are more rustic, packed earth trails, as well as a playground and outdoor exercise equipment. There’s a huge playground even closer to home, too, called Lion’s Children’s Playground. The open fields nearby can get a nice breeze from off the water, perfect for flying kites. In the hamlet just north of the playground, the Oklahoma City Boat Club is a membership-based club that’s been around longer than the lake itself. Originally located on Lake Overholser, it has hosted sailing regattas and sporting and social events on Lake Hefner since the mid-1940s.
Shops and eateries abound
Locals are spoiled for choice when it comes to retail and restaurants within easy reach of home. North May Avenue, which runs the length of Lakehurst’s east side, has everything from big box stores to local boutiques and grocers. At the corner of West Britton Road and May Avenue, there’s a Homeland and an Uptown Grocery. Just a mile south down May, there’s a Natural Grocers, too. For fresh seafood, sauces and marinades, visit Gulfport Seafood Market, which has been a staple on May Avenue less than half a mile from home since 1975. Blue Seven, a boutique-style small business specializing in Oklahoma-themed apparel, art and décor, is just half a mile south. “It’s a cute place to go to shop,” says Kaiser. “There are a bunch of restaurants around there, too,” she says, adding that they range from sit-down eateries to familiar fast-food chains. La Baguette Bistro, which Kaiser recommends as a personal favorite, is known for its French fare. But the nicest eateries around here, according to Kaiser, are on the lake. There’s Loui’s Grill & Bar, Mama Roja Mexican Kitchen, Redrock Canyon Grill and Hefner Grill all overlooking the waterfront, less than a mile and a half west.
Average Oklahoma City Public Schools
Between preschool and fourth grade, many neighborhood youngsters go to Ridgeview Elementary, which earns a C-plus from Niche. Older students continue to John Marshall Middle, which earns a C-minus, and John Marshall High, which earns a C-plus. The three schools are part of the Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) district. OKCPS students can take advantage of the district’s Career Academy Program, a four-year course of study designed with career preparation in mind. John Marshall High offers the Academy of Finance program. Participants spend their high school years taking an array of finance, business and technology classes, as well as practicing job interviews, working in paid internships and shadowing local professionals at their companies.
Proximity to main roads
The Lake Hefner Parkway runs between Lakehurst and the waterfront, connecting residents north to Interstate 344 and south to the Northwest Expressway. Both I-344 and the expressway are within 4 miles of home. “In Oklahoma City, people are still going to drive even if the place they’re going is close. We don’t have great public transportation,” says Kaiser. The closest OKC EMBARK bus route runs along Northwest 63rd Street more than a mile south. The 9.3-mile drive southeast to downtown can take less than 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Will Rogers World Airport is a little farther: 15.3 miles south.
