A distinct residential location in OKC
Because of its distinct name and location, Oklahoma City’s Medical Community may fly under the radar of homebuyers in the area. This eclectic mix of historic and contemporary homes branches off from N Kelley Avenue and sits a few blocks from the OU Health University of Oklahoma Medical Center, a healthcare facility that includes the Oklahoma University College of Nursing, the College of Dentistry, an emergency services center, and much more. “I would say a big percentage of the Medical Community is doctors and nurses who work at OU Medical Center,” says Jenna Tolbert-Harper, Realtor at Sage Sotheby's International Realty. She has been selling homes throughout OKC and Edmund since 2013. “But it’s not exclusively medical, and there are some people who work within hospital jobs throughout the urban core.”
Historic vs. contemporary in Medical Community
“There’s a pretty wide range of homes here, mostly single-family but some multifamily as well,” Tolbert-Harper says. “Rehabbed brick historic homes and Tudor style homes are primarily what you’ll find. There has been a decent amount of newer construction, too, so you’ll find some newer bungalows in the mix and some other new developments as well.”
These Tudor-style homes mingle among A-frame renovated properties first built in either the 1920s or 1950s, each with uniform urban yards. Trees and modern landscaping surround the historic homes located closer to the OU Medical Center, while recent constructions further out on the grid have yet to plant roots in their square patches. Homes closer to Lincoln Terrace boast larger yards that slope towards the road. Prices start as low as $65,000 for an investment bungalow property, sit between $150,000 and $300,000 for most single-family homes, and reach $525,000 for larger homes approaching the State Capitol and Lincoln Terrace.
Many of the homes are for the people who work nearby at the Medical Center.

Events at the heart of OKC
Public health classes and lessons aside, Medical Community residents have a range of annual events to choose from in the Modern Frontier. They’re blocks away from the Oklahoma History Center, Harn Homestead and the other museums near the State Capitol, each hosting their own local events. The Oklahoma City Zoo hosts the drive-or-walk-thru Safari Lights just 4 miles away.
Attending Oklahoma City public schools
OU attendees aren’t the only students living near Medical Community, which falls under Oklahoma City Public Schools. Kids start their education at Thelma R. Parks Elementary School, named for the iconic civil rights leader and Oklahoma educator. F.D. Moon Middle School sits just over a mile away; this school’s namesake was instrumental in the desegregation movement and was also the longest-standing principal at Frederick Douglass High School. All three schools earn a C-minus from Niche.
McMechan Park and tranquil courtyards
The well-kept playground and grassy fields at McMechan Park sit right outside the OU Medical Center, and smaller parks can be found throughout Medical Community’s gridded streets. Locals can also explore the Molly Shi Boren Courtyard and other statues and fountains on the Medical Center campus, joining employees and students on their way to class or clinicals.

Commuting throughout OKC
“The area is pedestrian-friendly enough where some people bike or use motorized bikes and scooters to get around or get to work at the hospital,” says Tolbert-Harper. “And there are some bus stops down Lincoln Boulevard, but most people commute by car.”
Midtown and Downtown OKC are each roughly 2.5 miles from the hospital and Medical Community. Because of the neighborhood’s central location, it’s likely quicker to drive or even walk in some cases than it would be to take advantage of the Embark bus system; the option is a welcome alternative either way.
OKC is a crossroads between Interstates 40 and 235, which adds convenience to an already organized, gridded city. Residents welcome visitors at Will Rogers World Airport just 14.5 miles away.

Keeping ambulance noise in mind
Proximity to work and, when needed, healthcare are perks of living blocks away from a major hospital. However, emergency vehicle sirens are a definite factor for future homeowners to keep in mind.
