Historic neighborhood; close-knit community
Like the homesteaders who settled here more than 130 years ago, residents of Oklahoma City’s historic Miller neighborhood are proud to call these picturesque streets home. “We take it very seriously to continue the legacy and make it a great place to live,” says Mike Stuart, long-time Miller resident and Treasurer of Miller’s neighborhood association. Though the association is voluntary, it’s one of the most active community associations in the city. “It’s a very friendly neighborhood because we have our voluntary association,” says Kara Bowes, a Broker with KBB Real Estate and Miller resident. When she moved to Miller and saw that there was a volunteer neighborhood watch, Bowes says she immediately felt safe. “They’re volunteering their time to watch out for their neighbors. The people living in the neighborhood care about the neighborhood.” But it’s not just the friendly atmosphere and rows of early 20th-century-era homes, which typically sell for below the OKC median, that draw homebuyers to Miller. It’s also the location. “If people don’t know what Miller is or haven’t been to Miller, they’re just amazed that there’s such a wonderful hidden neighborhood so close to downtown,” Stuart says, calling the enclave a “little hidden treasure.”
Vintage vibes circa early 1900s
Homes here range in style from Tudor Revival and Craftsman bungalows to Colonial Revival. The Miller Mansion, affectionately nicknamed so for its grand front veranda ornamented with tall, white columns, is Neoclassical in style. It was built in 1915 by neighborhood founder George Miller for his growing family and still stands today, now home to Mike Stuart and his family. Home prices here run anywhere from $69,000 for modest 1920s bungalows last updated in the 1980s to more than $420,000 for new builds designed to fit the character of the neighborhood. But the median hovers around the $230,000 mark, slightly under the median for the city.
Miller home tours
Twice a year, residents proudly open their charming early 20th-century homes to the public for the popular Miller in May Home Tour and the equally anticipated Miller Mantels and Trees Christmas Tour. The home tours, along with the annual Miller in the Moonlight dinner party and silent art auction, raise funds in support of neighborhood association events and community beautification projects.
Artsy enclave close to home
The vibrant 16th Street Plaza District, where visitors are spoiled for choice with a bounty of locally owned restaurants, shops and art galleries, is less than 2 miles east of home. Grab a smokey brisket taco and frozen sangria at Mexican Radio or a hearty, cheesy Macaroni Pony sandwich at The Mule. For sweet treats, there’s Pie Junkie. OKC Improv hosts shows, comedy classes and youth improv summer camps. Locals can hunt for vintage and handmade treasures at Magoo’s Attic or Bad Granny’s Bazaar. The Plaza District is also home to the Official State Theatre of Oklahoma: Lyric Theatre. The venue has presented musicals and plays since 1963 and even offers classes in all kinds of performing arts. For groceries and other everyday essentials, there’s a Walmart Neighborhood Market on Northwest 23rd Street a little less than a mile and a half away.
Average Oklahoma City Public Schools
Local kids attend schools in the Oklahoma City Public Schools district. Many go to Hawthorne Elementary and Taft Middle, both of which earn C-minus grades from Niche, then Northwest Classen High, which earns a C. Northwest Classen is one of two schools in the district with an Academy of Health Sciences, a magnet program that draws students interested in pursuing careers in health and healthcare from around the city. As they near the end of their grade school careers, Academy students enjoy the opportunity to participate in internships with local businesses in the health and healthcare sectors.
Reed Park
Neighborhood kids can burn off their energy on the playground at Reed Park just half a mile west of home. In the summer months, they can cool off on the sprayground, too. Covered picnic tables and benches overlook the climbing structures, and there’s a paved, multiuse trail circling the entire area. There’s also a partially fenced tennis court.
Minutes from downtown
Downtown is just 4 miles southeast, a drive that usually takes less than 15 minutes. EMBARK bus stops line Northwest 16th Street and Northwest 10th Street, the main thoroughfares that bound the neighborhood’s north and south sides. Interstate 44 is a little over a mile west.
