Modestly built older homes
Seven miles north of downtown Oklahoma City along the Broadway Extension Highway, or U.S. 77, is the North Highland neighborhood, which features grid-patterned residential streets lined with closely spaced, modestly built houses. “It’s an older, stable neighborhood with people who have lived there for a long time,” says Jerri Shepherd, a Broker/Owner with Legacy Three Realty Premier with over 30 years of experience in the real estate business. “There have been some instances where people have passed on a home in this neighborhood to the next generation. There’s also been an occasion where someone moved to another neighborhood and returned to North Highland.”

Investment activity in North Highland
North Highland has homes considered Minimal Traditional, primarily built in the 1960s and ‘70s. Along with ranch-style, the typical house has between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet with three to four bedrooms and at least a one-car attached garage. Some homes have had garages converted into extra rooms. The area is also popular with first-time homebuyers. “The majority of the houses in this neighborhood are under $200,000; in fact, there are many that are well below that,” Shepherd says. With the age of the homes, the neighborhood attracts investors who spruce up the property and rent it out. About 60% of the residents who live in North Highland are renters. Some people in the eastern part of the neighborhood may be able to hear the traffic along the Broadway Extension Highway more easily.

From food truck to seafood haven
Off the Hook Seafood and More started as a food truck that would show up in various places around Oklahoma City. After customers requested that they be in a consistent location, they opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant on Britton Road. Their specialty is seafood smothered in lobster cream sauce. Just across the Broadway Extension Highway is the Flix Brewhouse, a popular place where a burger and a brew can be enjoyed while catching the latest Hollywood releases. The Walmart Neighborhood Market is a few miles west on Britton Road for groceries.

Short drive to water recreation
Lake Hefner was built in the 1940s to expand the water supply for Oklahoma City. The lake covers 2,500 acres, and the water depth averages about 30 feet. Many bring their boats here and cast a line into the water hoping for largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish and bluegill.
North Highland residents have access to more than one bus stop along Broadway.
Hop on the bus on a main north/south route
Oklahoma City’s Metro Transit Bus System has several stops along Western Avenue, one of the area's major north/south roads. The access to the Broadway Extension Highway can have downtown commuters at work in 10 minutes. However, the demographics of the people living in North Highland tend to be a bit older. “I think most people here are older and have retired from Tinker Air Force Base,” Shepherd says. The large base is located southeast of downtown.
