Affordable homes and nearby amenities in OKC
In south Oklahoma City, Parmelee is surrounded by some of the most well-loved amenities outside of downtown. Jenna Laird, a Realtor with Verity Real Estate with 20 years of experience in OKC, says that location is what brings a lot of people in. “It’s a very convenient and very fun location,” she says. “You’re close to interstates 240 and 35, and there are all kinds of fun things you can do in the area.” One such activity is catching a movie at the Winchester Drive-In, which has been showing films since 1968. Another draw is the housing, with established homes and a market that trends lower than the rest of the city. “Parmelee is the flip side of some of the neighborhoods farther north, where everything has already been remodeled and updated, and you’re paying $400,000 for the house,” Laird says. “Here, you can pay $200,000 and put $20,000 or $25,0000 into the kitchen and make it your own. Instead of taking someone else’s idea and living with it, you get to take your own ideas and turn them into a reality.” Downtown Oklahoma City is about 8 miles away.

Brick homes typically cost $250,000 or less
A stroll along the sidewalks of Parmelee takes residents past lines of mid-to late-20th-century homes, with some newer properties built after 2000. Oak and cedar trees dot the grassy lawns, with leaves that change to vibrant shades of orange and red in the fall. Wide driveways, multi-car garages and wooden fences around backyards are common features. Ranch styles and single-story houses with traditional influences fill most of the neighborhood, many boasting brick exteriors or accents. “Parmelee is not one of those all-siding neighborhoods,” Laird says. Prices for a three- to four-bedroom range from $150,000 to $250,000. “$200,000 for these three-bedroom, 1,500-square-foot-houses with all these possibilities in and around them is really not a bad price,” Laird says. “When people come in from outside this area, and they see the affordability we have here that we take for granted, it’s shocking to them – in a good way.” Oklahoma City is in Tornado Alley. Most standard homeowner’s insurance will cover wind and storm damage.

Expansive parks and OKC’s only drive-in theater
Southern Oaks Park has a playground, a basketball court, a baseball field and a soccer field less than 1 mile away. “It’s a big ol’ park,” Laird says. A walking trail leads to the South Oaks Recreation Center and the local branch of the library. The recreation center offers more than rental rooms and a small gym, with various classes, including guitar lessons and medieval-inspired fencing. Kids can take some of these classes during the after-school program or during one of the summer camps. The entrance of the Southern Oaks Library is decorated with sculptures designed by OKC artist Joe Slack, which he named “Cover to Cover.” There are study rooms and a full calendar of programming that includes Storytime and crafting lessons. The iconic neon cowboy sign calls folks from all over to Winchester Drive-In, the only drive-in movie theater in the city. “I drive 25 minutes to get to that drive-in with my kids at least once a month – it’s a family tradition,” Laird says. Residents of Parmelee do not have to travel far, with the theater less than 1 mile away. “It’s a great way for families to spend a weekend night,” Laird says. “It entertains kids of all ages”. Movie-goers can enjoy a film every weekend, watching the big screen and tuning into 100.9 FM to hear it.

One of its most popular dishes is chicken fried steak, and there is a rotating selection of homemade pies. “Parmelee is a little more family-oriented, with the park and the drive-in,” Laird says. “But if you are looking for a night out with your friends, you can head north to those areas with more of a nightlife scene, and you’re downtown in 10 minutes.” Social Capital is downtown, with over 100 craft beers. to La Michoacana Supermarket is one of the closest grocery stores; Walmart and Home Depot are less than 1 mile away. The Oklahoma City Farmers Public Market sells fresh produce, dairy and meat, as well as honey and canned goods, on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
