Penn Park is central to shops and services

Location is key at Penn Park in northwestern Oklahoma City. Within 2 miles of the John Kilpatrick Turnpike and The Village, residents are close to grocery stores, restaurants and hospitals. “My favorite thing about that particular neighborhood is you’re so close to The Village, which is a highly desirable area in Oklahoma City, so there’s lots of really great places to shop and eat,” says Whitney Mendenhall, a Realtor with Keller Williams Elite. “It’s all about proximity and how quickly you can get to all the fun things around the city."

Ample eats in The Village and Chisholm Creek

Everyday essentials and close-to-home restaurants are nearby in The Village. Hopscotch Kitchen & Bar is an inviting bar and restaurant where friends meet for games of pool and cocktails on the patio. Traditional Japanese food, like authentic ramen and sushi, is Mizu’s specialty. A few miles from Lake Hefner, Louie’s Grill & Bar is a go-to spot for game day watch parties, comforting pub food and waterfront dining. “It’s also really close to Chisholm Creek and Quail Springs Mall,” Mendenhall says of the neighborhood. “Chisholm Creek has tons of restaurants. It’s a fun vibe and Penn Park is pretty close to all of that.” There are also several grocery stores in and around the district, including Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club and Aldi.

Macklanburg Park has splash pad, rec center

The Village Branch of the Metropolitan Library System is within a mile of the neighborhood, with entertainment beyond its extensive book collection, including regular story times, classes and club meeting spaces. Kids can build “pawsitive” self-esteem through the Children Reading to Dogs program, a monthly event designed to bolster reading and public speaking skills by “reading aloud to certified therapy dogs” in a low-stakes environment, according to the library’s website. Macklanburg Park is just a quarter mile away and is home to the Macklanburg Recreation Center, as well as a sunny neighborhood playground and splash pad. Lake Hefner is a favorite among kayakers, anglers and paddleboarders. Land lubbers can take hike or bike on of 10 miles of paved trails, play and skate at Stars and Stripes Park, or relax and watch the sunset.

Ranch-style and contemporary homes

The community mostly features ’70s-era contemporary, split-level and ranch-style homes. Wanjon says the market here is hot because of the combination of price point, location and well-maintained homes. “It’s a good alternative to The Village because it’s near there, but it’s not as expensive,” she says. “It’s still a nice area where people aren’t just maintaining their homes but taking care of them and taking pride in them.” Homes in need of a little TLC can cost between $145,000 and $200,000. Move-in ready homes with three or four bedrooms range from $200,000 to $300,000.

Penn Park students can attend schools in the Oklahoma City Public Schools system, often following the path from Ridgeview Elementary, rated C-plus by Niche, to C-minus John Marshall Middle and C-plus John Marshall Enterprise High. Marshall Middle is the most conveniently located at just a quarter mile west of most homes, but both Ridgeview and Marshall Enterprise High are 3 miles from the neighborhood. High schoolers can earn an associate degree for in-state schools through concurrent enrollment and participate in the school’s Academy of Finance, which offers courses in business, technology and finance. Close to the John Kilpatrick Turnpike

Residents take Interstate 235 to downtown OKC, which is about 11 miles south. Two hospitals — Oklahoma ER & Hospital and St. Anthony Healthplex — are within a 3-mile radius of the neighborhood. The John Kilpatrick Turnpike, also identified as I-344, forms a partial beltway around Oklahoma City that runs counter-clockwise from I-240 to I-35. Most people fly out of Will Rogers World Airport 15 miles south. The closest Embark bus stop is just outside the neighborhood at the intersection of Northwest 113th Street and North Pennsylvania Avenue. However, there is no crosswalk to traverse busy Pennsylvania Avenue, nor are there sidewalks on the east side of the road where the bus stop is located.

Just outside Penn Park, the closest Embark stop is at NW 113th St. and N. Pennsylvania Ave.
