Home to quick commutes and community spirit
With its location only a mile from the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, it's no wonder that Pitts Park is an attractive option for scrubs-clad medical students. "Pitts Park's location is important," says Erica Lewis, a Realtor with eXp Realty. "It's near the state capitol and Downtown OKC and has quick access to all major highways, but being in biking distance to OU Medical Center makes it a big draw for students." But Pitts Park is more than just a neighborhood known for its proximity to major employers. There is also a strong sense of community here, felt primarily at the central park and community center named for one of East Side Oklahoma's hometown heroes.
Get together at Riley Leroy Pitts Park
The neighborhood's central green space gets its name from Captain Riley Leroy Pitts, one of the first African Americans to receive a Congressional Medal of Honor. The park has a playground, as well as tennis and basketball courts. The Pitts Recreation Center has a kitchen and a gym, the site of youth programs and several community events throughout the year, like weekly farmers markets in the warmer months. The farmers market accepts SNAP and SFSNP benefits, ensuring that fresh food is available to all.
Community Day and Juneteenth on the East
One of the biggest events in Pitts Park is Community Day, which begins with a unity march from the state capitol back to Pitts Park, where the neighborhood enjoys performances from local dance teams, free food and children's books, as well as engagement activities, all of which aim to lift up the community as a whole. The community also comes together in June at the annual Juneteenth on the East celebration planned by the non-profit With Love Project Foundation. The festival runs along NE 23rd Street between Hood and Kelham, which is walkable for Pitts Park residents. Events in the past have included live performances from well-known artists, dancing, interactive murals and a 5k race.
James Beard Award Winning restaurant, Florence's is located in Pitts Park.
Soul food and a locally-run grocery store
Pitts Park is home to some of the best comfort food in OKC. Florence's Restaurant along Northeast 23rd Street is an award-winning restaurant best known for its soul food. Right next door, Bobo's Fried Chicken is an OKC legend, often ranked as some of the best fried chicken in the city. But it's only open on Friday and Saturday nights, so there's almost always a long wait in line. To-go meals can be picked up from Eastside Eatery in the local grocery store, The Market at Eastpoint. The Market is a black-owned and locally-run business with the non-profit Restore OKC that aims to provide the Northwest Oklahoma City community access to healthy, affordable food.
Bungalows, Tudors and new construction
Lining Pitts Park's residential streets are primarily early 20th-century wood-framed bungalows, cottages and some brick Tudor Revival-style homes. When newer homes do crop up, their designs are often in keeping with the neighborhood's vintage styles. "Some of the houses in Pitts Park have been redone, but they've kept that original character," Lewis says. "They're also building some new houses in the area, which are gorgeous and still have the bungalow style." Most Pitts Park homes range from around 900 to 1,500 square feet, usually with two or three bedrooms. Home prices vary from below $100,000 for a smaller cottage needing updating to $250,000 for a newly built modern bungalow.
Pitts Park is home to many Tudor Revival homes.

Douglass High School athletics
Kids in the Pitts Park area attend Thelma R. Parks Elementary School, named after the civil rights leader and longtime OKC educator. The school has earned a C-minus from Niche. Older students can head to F.D. Moon Middle School, rated C, before attending Douglass High School, rated C-minus overall. Douglass High does pick up an A-minus grade for athletics, with a well-equipped sports department that led the men's basketball team to victory in the 2023 4A State Basketball Championship.
Trips downtown by bus
Residents take advantage of a handful of bus stops in the neighborhood's southwest corner. The bus carries riders to surrounding areas, providing a 25-minute ride into downtown Oklahoma City. Commuters working downtown can also reach the area via a 2.3-mile drive via Northeast 4th Street, and those working at OU Health University of Oklahoma Medical Center can get to work with a quick bike ride.
Close to the OU Medical Center
With the OU Medical Center just south of Pitts Park, it's not uncommon to hear the sirens of emergency vehicles heading in and out of the facility. For those sensitive to noise, this may be a drawback, although most areas in OKC will come with accompanying city noise.
