Not far from the action of downtown OKC
Prairie Queen sits south of the center of Oklahoma City, within seven miles of downtown. The neighborhood’s closely spaced homes line neatly along rectangular grid-patterned residential streets. Surrounded on three sides by busy thoroughfares, Prairie Queen is popular for its proximity to central OKC’s retail and dining options.
Midcentury affordability and convenience
Ranch-style homes dominate in Prairie Queen, with midcentury detailing and flat-roofed carports stretching over long driveways. Home sizes range from one-bedroom to larger three- to four-bedroom homes, with the median price at around $200,000. Its affordability and easy access to surrounding OKC amenities make Prairie Queen great for first-time homebuyers and renters looking to save up for their first home. Haley Patton, with the OKC Dream Center, says that Prairie Queen’s location is the number one draw to residents. “The highway is right up the street,” she says, “close to the center of the city.” You don’t have to go far for everyday shopping and dining. A short drive in nearly any direction will get you to one of the several Walmarts nearby. The 240 Penn Park shopping center is not far, less than a mile down Pennsylvania Avenue.
Carports are a popular add-on feature in many Prairie Queen homes.

Helping the community and at-risk youth
The OKC Dream Center has been a community pillar for over a decade. Patton, the non-profit organization’s Program Director, says their mission is to serve at-risk youth in Prairie Queen and the surrounding neighborhoods by “providing a safe place for them to run around and play” and even “helping them with their homework.” She says many of the children the Dream Center works with can’t get help with school assignments from their parents, who primarily speak Spanish, so the center provides that assistance. In addition to its youth-centered programs, the Dream Center runs a clothes closet and food pantry for inner-city OKC community members in need.
Serving a diversified student base
School-aged children in Prairie Queen attend Oklahoma City Public Schools, rated a C on Niche, with an excellent 14-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio throughout the district. Since a large percentage of the student population at Hillcrest Elementary School are Spanish speaking, there is an English Language Learners program. The school is rated a C overall. Jefferson Middle School has 900 students in grades five through eight and a C-minus grade. U.S. Grant High School has a digital school library where books can be checked out online at any time of day. The school has a C rating on Niche.
You are never too old to learn
The Taylor Recreation Center in Taylor Park, less than a mile east, also offers a variety of community enrichment programs. Prairie Queen residents of all ages can take advantage of the regular dance and music classes taught there, from jazz and ballet to choir and piano. The rec center also offers special interest classes in various subjects for those not so musically inclined.
An outdoor silver screen gem
Prairie Queen movie lovers aren’t far from OKC’s only operating drive-in cinema, the Winchester Drive-In. The theater has drawn residents from across the city for its summertime double-features since 1968. You can’t miss the giant neon cowboy waving off Western Avenue from the drive-in’s entrance.

An OKC family-owned tradition
Prairie Queen is home to one of OKC’s hidden gems, off 59th Street. Jimmy’s Roundup Café and Fried Pies has been a local staple for over 30 years. Stop in for their famous fried pies or hand-pinched dinner rolls. It’s family-owned, which means the restaurant’s namesake could be seen hard at work or any other family member.
