The streets of the Shepherd Historic District are lined with well-maintained lawns.
Historic homestead listed in National Register of Historic Places
The story of the Shepherd Historic District is one of preservation. What was once a 160-acre homestead claimed in 1860 has now turned into a sought-after Oklahoma City enclave. Formerly named Cushion Place, this historic enclave is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a Historic Preservation District, meaning residents have strict guidelines about any exterior changes to their homes.
Historic Preservation and Community Togetherness
The Shepherd Historic Neighborhood Association has been a main driver in community spirit and togetherness since forming in the 1970s. Locals chat with their neighbors or take their kids to play at Swatek Park during community ice cream socials and cookouts. The neighborhood association’s quarterly newsletter celebrates well-maintained homes by crowning them with the Shepherd Yard of the Month award. Though an award is an added incentive, being part of a Historic Preservation District means that homeowners must adhere to certain guidelines to preserve the historic integrity of the neighborhood.
Tudor Revivals and more historic homes
“Most of the homes are Tudor style, though we have a couple of other styles as well. We’re a historic preservation, so that means we can’t do certain things to the exterior of the home without approval,” says Erica Taylor, President of the Shepherd Historic Neighborhood Association. Tudor Revivals, built in the late 1920s into the 30s, are the dominant housing style throughout Shepherd, along with Colonial Revivals. Cozy two-bedroom cottages and bungalows are also peppered throughout the small community, and home prices tend to range between $200,000 and $400,000. “This is our forever home, and there are several people here who feel the same way,” says Taylor. “It’s really a sweet neighborhood and everyone’s really friendly.”
