Lakeside living in northwestern OKC
Residents of Ski Island Lake Club embrace a slow-living lifestyle with expansive outdoor living spaces and gorgeous lakefront views. “It’s not difficult to feel like you’re on a never-ending vacation in Ski Island,” says Chip Adams, owner of Adams Family Real Estate. Nestled on the banks of Ski Island Lake, the residential streets of this northwestern Oklahoma City neighborhood are quiet even by suburban standards. A lot of the traffic is on the lake instead of the roads. “You don’t even need to use the road to visit your neighbors,” Adams says. “Some of the homes have boathouses, and a lot have docks or boat slips. It’s almost easier to go by water.”
Relaxing on Ski Island Lake
Ski Islanders take to Ski Island Lake to feel the rush of the water under them while waterskiing or boating. Some residents even take their hand at fishing in the lake. The private lake is for residents only, allowing easy sailing for whenever residents want to spend the day on the water. Lake Hefner is home to trails that circle the picturesque lake, and is frequented by runners, bikers and walkers alike. Golfers can book a tee time at Lake Hefner Golf Club for a fun time on the greens.
Community events on the lake
“It’s super cute, it’s definitely a family friendly neighborhood,” says Nikki Edie, a Realtor with Bailee & Company Real Estate. The homeowner’s association here is active and hosts community events throughout the year. In December, there’s the Annual Ski Island Boat Parade and Santa on the Lake. The parade draws residents out to their backyards after sunset to watch a line of boats enveloped in festive twinkle lights motor around. On Christmas Eve each year, Santa himself takes to the lake to visit families and hear last-minute additions to youngsters’ wish lists. In the spring, the Easter Bunny visits Ski Island in Commodore Park for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Annual Ski Island Big Event happens shortly after, in early summer, drawing residents from across the neighborhood to participate in a community-wide day of cleanup and maintenance, tackling planned projects from tree trimming to shoreline tidying.
Remodeled lake homes
You’ll find mainly 1960s and 1970s-era homes here, with broad, well-maintained front lawns and backyards often overlooking the water. “A lot of the homes are updated,” says Edie. Tall wooden privacy fences are rare in Ski Island, where residents prefer their lakefront views unobstructed. “There’s not a lot of new development in the neighborhood,” Adams notes, adding that “most people just remodel and modernize” their homes rather than tearing them down or moving away. Most homes start out in the mid-200s and can sell as high as $500,000. But Adams explains that home values increase with modernization and outdoor amenities.
Retail shopping and lakeside dining
MacArthur Boulevard gives way to several restaurants along the Northwest Expressway, and there are lakefront eateries on the opposite side of Lake Hefner. “The restaurants at Lake Hefner are all good,” says Adams, “but there’s also Charleston’s.” Less than 3 miles south of Ski Island, the American-style comfort food eatery is such a local favorite that there are three locations in OKC. Dinners at Redrock Canyon Grill are picturesque with lakefront views that add to relaxing vibe of the restaurant. For their everyday shopping, Ski Islanders can head south to the shopping centers clustered along the Northwest Expressway. Residents can shop for groceries at Aldi, and there’s several retail options in the Rockwell Plaza Shopping Center.
Putnam City Schools
Ski Island’s youngest residents are served by the highly rated Putnam City Schools system. Many attend Dennis Elementary, which has a B rating from Niche, Hefner Middle and Putnam City North High School, which both received B-minus grades. The Dolphin Splash Carnival held at Dennis Elementary each year is a popular Parent Teacher Organization-sponsored event full of fun activities for students and their families, from duct-taping a teacher to the wall to face painting and raffles.
Close to downtown
From its convenient location and great schools to the idyllic lakefront atmosphere, Ski Island Lake Club is the neighborhood for those looking to settle in a slice of paradise. The community is great for commuters as well, with easy access to the Northwest Expressway. State Highway 74 can be used to get to the downtown area of OKC, set just 17 miles away.
