An old community that continues to grow
Mustang was first settled during the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. Named after a creek, this area began and, in many parts, still is an agricultural community. The lush riparian woodlands surrounding the different streams and ponds in the region make for good farming. Today, large swaths of South Mustang are being developed as new residents drawn to its rural feel and proximity to Oklahoma City and Will Rogers Airport buy lots and homes in planned and growing subdivisions.
Mansions on farmland
Karyn Seabrook, a Realtor for Key Realty and Property Management with 12 years of experience, says, “Even with the airport nearby, the neighborhood feels quiet and secluded.” Land in promising subdivisions is listed at $30,000 per acre in South Mustang. For under $500,000, home buyers will find large brick homes constructed this century on over an acre with the bones of ramblers and the ornamentation of Tudors and colonials, such as window walls. For $1 million, gorgeous mansions less than two decades old on 5-acre lots with outbuildings and thickets of juniper and oak trees can be found. At the top of the market, palatial French-inspired estates not 10 years old on more than 10 acres and with luxurious amenities such as wine cellars and in-ground pools are listed for under $3 million.

A wild river and great city recreation services
South Mustang is bordered by the Canadian River, for which its county is named. The river is a tributary of the Arkansas River. The river is used for various unofficial recreational activities, but residents are wise to monitor its water quality. Closer to town, the 158-acre Wild Horse Park offers biking trails, a dog park and several sports fields. There are ample city services in Mustang. The Mustang Aquatic Center is a massive complex with lap lanes, waterslides and play areas. The nearby Mustang Recreation Center offers residents a climbing wall, fitness center and basketball courts for a small fee.

The food scene comes to Mustang
As the artisanal food movement has swept the country, OKC has seen its fair share of hot new eateries, and as OKC has expanded, areas like Mustang have seen new restaurants of a caliber not common to traditional agricultural communities. Lokal is one such place. The western-style gastropub specializes in regional craft beer and ingredients, offering locally sourced bison to catfish. Most of the commerce is near the intersection of Routes 152 and 4. Patrons will find local sushi and sandwich shops and fast-food chains. Good Mexican food is easy to find at spots like Los Vaqueros and Del Rancho. There are seasonal and year-round farmers markets like Growing Payne’s and big box stores like Walmart for grocery runs.
There is always something to do in South Mustang.
Airport only a few miles away
“The proximity to the airport is ideal for commuters who need to travel outside of the state for work,” says Seabrook. “Easy access to highways is another big draw.” Will Rogers World Airport has direct flights to cities across the United States. The airport is 2 miles east of the neighborhood but only partly in the flight path. South Mustang is 20 miles from the Oklahoma State Capitol, and traffic tends to be sparse. State Route 4 runs north-south through Mustang, and State Highway 152 crosses east-west. Commuters can access Interstate 40 just over a mile east.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
