South Oklahoma City
Newly developed brick homes dominate the area
Brick homes developed in 2010 and beyond dominate South Oklahoma City. “In order to preserve the historic areas in the center of Oklahoma City, people are starting to build and expand out into this area,” says Jenna Laird, broker and owner of Verity Real Estate, who has been selling in Oklahoma City for 18 years. The area comprises several subdivisions, each offering unique amenities to residents. “Williamson Farms is a popular option in that area,” says John Upshaw, a Realtor with Whittington Realty who has sold in the area for 8 years. “It’s gated and has a swimming pool, a clubhouse, walking trails and an open field for kids to play. It allows people to enjoy a little more space, but you’re just minutes from the highway.” Custom builds with two- to three-car garages are popular here, priced between $235,000 and nearly $400,000. The Preserve at Parkside is also situated in South Oklahoma City, where buyers will find well-maintained half-acre lawns with mature trees that back up to South Lakes Park. Prices for the four- and five-bedroom farmhouses, new traditional and custom-built homes are more expensive here, ranging from $690,000 to $750,000. Each subdivision in South Oklahoma City is walkable, but residents will need a car to navigate much of the surrounding city.Within driving distance of small shopping centers
For everyday errands and grocery essentials, there is a Walmart Supercenter and a Crest Foods along Southwest 104th Street along the area’s eastern end. There’s also a Walmart Neighborhood Market on Southwest 134th Street. As for restaurants, Laird says, “Having the airport nearby helps bring in more places to eat and other activity nearby. You’re not far from all the shopping centers along Interstate 240 either.” Penn Park Shopping Center is less than 7.5 miles away from the heart of South Oklahoma City and can be reached by taking Interstates 44 and 240. Locals can peruse the racks at national retailers like Old Navy, Ross and Marshalls there. Next door is the Walnut Square shopping mall, which has discount clothing stores and a GreenAcres Market. Restaurants like Charleston’s and Saltgrass Steakhouse surround the shopping complexes and are hotspots among locals who stop by for the pub fare and Western décor.Highly rated Moore Public Schools with STEM pathways
Some homes on the northern end of South Oklahoma City are zoned for Mustang Public Schools, while the central and southern parts of the area are zoned for Moore Public Schools, both of which are highly rated. Students may attend Mustang Elementary and Middle schools, each earning an A-minus from Niche. They’ll later filter into Mustang High School, which gets a B-plus from Niche. If they are zoned for Moore Public Schools, students may go to South Lake Elementary School, which Niche rates an A. Nearby Highland West Junior High School gets a B from Niche, while Westmoore High School earned an A-minus. The high school also offers its students STEM pathways, with specialized computer science and aviation courses.Expansive parks packed with perks
Spanning more than 150 acres, South Lakes Park sits in the heart of the area. For those living in The Preserve at Parkside subdivision in South Oklahoma City, the basketball courts, fishing ponds, playground, soccer fields and skate park are within walking distance. Locals from across the city venture to the green space to take advantage of its amenities, including a 1.5-mile-long walking trail that wraps around the playground, basketball courts and ponds. There’s also an event center available to rent for parties and events. Within 3.5 miles of the area, Earlywine Park and Golf Club is another hub for outdoor recreation. When school is out for the summer, kids flock to the park’s aquatic center, which has a pool, splash pad and three towering slides. The park also has a mile-long walking and biking trail, tennis courts and a playground. Golfers can play a round on one of the two courses at Earlywine Golf Club or practice their swing at the driving range.Convenience to I-44 puts big-city amenities within reach
From the heart of South Oklahoma City, Will Rogers World Airport is roughly 9 miles away, and locals can take Interstate 44 to reach the terminals. The drive will be shorter for those living on the northern end of the area. The freeway also connects residents to downtown Oklahoma City and INTEGRIS Health Canadian Valley Hospital, each within 17.5 miles of South Oklahoma City. For those who use public transit, the closest EMBARK bus stops hover around Oklahoma City Community College and South May Avenue, about 6.5 miles away.
