The final resting place of Wiley Post
Wiley Post made history when he became the first aviator to circumnavigate the globe on a solo flight in the summer of 1933. After a tragic plane crash in 1935 ended the lives of Post and humorist Will Rogers, a passenger on the flight, the pilot was laid to rest in a northern Oklahoma City neighborhood called The Oaks. Visitors pay their respects at Memorial Park Cemetery, a quiet space that takes up nearly half the real estate in this neighborhood 5 miles south of Edmond. Two busy thoroughfares, Interstate 344 and U.S. Route 77, run alongside the neighborhood, whose residential areas are concentrated on the western side. These wooded, winding streets are about halfway between Lake Hefner and Spring Creek Park, two of the city’s largest recreational spaces. Homes are also within a short drive of Edmond’s top-notch schools, a huge selling point for families and investors. “The returns are fantastic,” says Jerri Shepherd, broker and owner of Legacy Three Realty Premier. “I can’t say enough about the schools. We have a lot of people who want to move here, and they say, ‘We don’t have children; that’s not a concern.’ Well, it will make a difference when you sell.”
Edmond Memorial High is among the A-rated schools
Students can attend a progression of highly ranked public schools, each a short drive from The Oaks. Orvis Risner Elementary School puts on popular before- and after-school programs, and Cimarron Middle School offers clubs and activities to match a broad range of interests. During Swine Week at Edmond Memorial High School, the principal kisses a pig to support student fundraising, a tradition that dates back to 1986. All three schools earn a Niche grade of A.
Brick contemporary homes on shaded streets
Homes make up just a third of the property mix in the neighborhood. Car dealerships and the structures and gravesites at Memorial Park Cemetery dominate the eastern half of The Oaks, with the residential areas mostly concentrated on the western side. Many of the homes were built from the late '80s into the early 2000s, but “there’s a lot of new construction — contemporary, traditional homes,” Shepherd says. The median home price for the neighborhood is $328,000, which is high by Oklahoma City standards, where the median home price is $250,000. Brick contemporary homes with attached garages sell in the $300,000 to $400,000 range, while luxury homes in gated communities like Cedar Pointe run $550,000 to $850,000. Most lots measure just shy of a quarter acre, with some offering up to a third of an acre. Mature trees are abundant, however, many streets here do not have sidewalks.

Playgrounds and walking trails at Whispering Heights Park
Residents venture north of the neighborhood to enjoy the amenities at Whispering Heights Park. Picnic pavilions and creative play structures — some geared toward adventurous older kids, others toddler-friendly — pop up in various locations around the wooded green space. A winding path leads to a small fishing pond at Bickham-Rudkin Park and “The Owl and the Oak” sculpture at the Margaret Annis Boys Centennial Arboretum. The fishing pond is also accessible from Edmond Dog Park, where pups enjoy splashing in the shallows and running around the fenced-in field. The lighthouse and fishing opportunities at Lake Hefner are about 5 miles west of the neighborhood, and Spring Creek Park’s sandy beach and campsites lie 5 miles in the other direction.
Highways branching off The Oaks
Interstate 344 runs along the neighborhood’s southern edge, connecting to I-35 and U.S. Route 77. Both provide access to downtown Oklahoma City 11 miles south, but it’s much easier for residents to make the 5-mile trip to downtown Edmond. Summit Medical Center, the nearest general hospital, is about 2 miles away and easily accessible via Kelley Avenue. This major thoroughfare separates the cemeteries from the car dealerships on its north-south trajectory through The Oaks. While Citylink buses serve the Edmond area, none of the routes pass through the neighborhood, making the area car-dependent. Will Rogers World Airport, the largest airport in Oklahoma, lies 20 miles south.
Life in Tornado Alley
Oklahoma City is part of Tornado Alley, a swath of land in the central US where twisters touch down frequently. Specifically, the city sees an average of five severe tornadoes per year. Since the risk of severe weather increases homeowners' insurance premiums, policies are often more expensive than in some other states.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
