Established around four residential lakes, The Pines is a quiet community on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. Just 4 miles from Lake Hefner, locals have ample opportunity to partake in the city’s outlying outdoor recreation while remaining close to nearby thoroughfares. "The Pines has a great aesthetic and atmosphere between its lakes and outdoor rec," says Jamie Cope, a Realtor with Collection 7 Realty. "And it's in a great location. You've got shopping in any direction within a mile.” Picturesque and leisurely, the neighborhood is often a hit with OKC’s former city-dwellers.
Shoreline Drive’s traditional homes
The traditional ranch-style homes found in The Pines were mostly constructed in the 1960s and 70s, often neighboring bi-levels with contemporary and Tudor-style flourishes. Properties along Shoreline Drive are sandwiched between the neighborhood’s east and west lakes, with backyards and cul-de-sacs literally extending to the shoreline. For between $200,000 and $300,000, potential homebuyers can expect three to four bedrooms with around 2,000 square feet and comfortable yard space. Those looking for more eclectic architectural styles may also find luck closer to the water, with the occasional Prairie home and midcentury modern build woven into the neighborhood’s layout.
4 miles south of the scenic Lake Hefner
One of the neighborhood’s biggest draws is its proximity to Lake Hefner. Just 4 miles north across the Northwest Expressway, the lake is surrounded by parks and restaurants attracting thousands of guests from the greater OKC region. Stars and Stripes Park is certainly the most notable, featuring a 10,000-square-foot skate park, a sizeable patriotic-themed playground and miles of walking trails. Riversport OKC even offers sailing lessons and stand-up paddleboard rentals, and plays host to the annual River Festival held over two weekends in the summer. Centered around competitive rowing, paddling and dragon boat racing, the festival also offers food from local vendors and a lively fireworks show in the evenings. Local golfers can join the Lake Hefner Golf Club, equipped with two public championship courses and a restaurant on site. The lake even features an airfield for remote control aircraft enthusiasts.
Clubs and activities at Putnam City Schools
Students in The Pines are zoned for Putnam City Schools and begin at Tulakes Elementary. With a C on Niche, Tulakes offers prekindergarten through fifth-grade students the opportunity to join after-school activities like choir, book club and a variety of sports. Kenneth Cooper Middle—also known as Cooper Middle—earns a C-plus on Niche. The school is located on the western side of Wiley Post Airport, so car riders can expect an easy commute via West Wilshire Boulevard. Putnam City High School, however, is about 3 miles south, bordering Dolese Park in Warr Acres. With a B-minus on Niche, Putnam City High provides students with a wide array of clubs and activities, as well as expansive performing arts and athletics opportunities.
One of OKC’s most prominent thoroughfares
Though residents may feel tucked away from the bustling city 14 miles south, they’re actually conveniently positioned next door to one of OKC’s most prominent thoroughfares. "The Pines is very nicely located by the Northwest Expressway,” explains Becky Ivins, Broker and Team Lead at Movers Real Estate Company. “That entire mile along the expressway is practically all restaurants." Heading east toward Interstate 44, the expressway provides exits to premier shopping hubs like Penn Square Mall along the way. Nearby, state Route 74, Lake Hefner Parkway, runs parallel to the lake, providing access to its surrounding parks and eateries. Residents of The Pines should note that Wiley Post Airport practically borders the neighborhood, bringing aircraft noise and occasional traffic. Thankfully, the historic airport isn't as heavily used as Will Rogers World Airport, about 14 miles south.
Optimizing Northwest Expressway’s shops and eateries
Bordering the northern edge of The Pines, Northwest Expressway is lined with retail spots, local haunts and chain restaurants for residents to peruse. Andy’s Frozen Custard is a hit over the summer, conveniently located on the way home from Stars and Stripes Park. Dinner on the lakefront might take place at Mama Roja’s Mexican Kitchen or Redrock Canyon Grill, both offering scenic views of the water. Closer to home, Hideaway Pizza is an eclectic Oklahoma institution founded in 1957. And a mile or so up the road, Rockwell Shopping Plaza has a Target, TJ Maxx and Aldi, while Silver Springs Pointe boasts a Walmart Supercenter and Sam’s Club.
