Oklahoma City's Woodland Park neighborhood stands out for its shopping opportunities, with a massive indoor mall and another booming retail district both a couple of miles away. Homes in Woodland Park are "just a hop, skip and a jump" away from Penn Square Mall, says Jamie Cope, Realtor with Connection 7 Realty. This mecca of merchandise features over 144 stores and restaurants. Cope adds, "You're also really close to Classen Curve, which is just booming right now. You've got it all right there." And if what you're shopping for is a home itself, Woodland Park has you covered there, as well, with its historical architecture, reasonably priced houses and a great location close to modern amenities.
According to Cope, Classen Curve used to be a small shopping area with a few older stores. But in 2010, the area was redeveloped into a sprawling, modern retail center that the locals love. It's a frequent destination for errand running, retail therapy or a good meal. Shoppers can grab organic groceries at the Curve's Whole Foods, find new workout gear at Red Coyote and Lululemon, or treat a loved one to a sparkly necklace from Kendra Scott-- to name a few of Classen Curve's many upscale retailers. And after all that shopping, it's time to relax and recharge with a pale lager and a plate of pulled chicken nachos at the popular Republic Gastro Pub.
Woodland Park's streets are lined with an eclectic mix of home styles. From historic early twentieth-century Tudor Revivals and bungalows to retro brick mid-century ranch styles to more contemporary 1980s condos, homebuyers have a lot of choices. With such architectural variety in the neighborhood, buyers will find a range of house sizes, usually from 1,000 square feet up to 3,000 square feet. And with home prices that usually fall between $140,000 and $250,000, depending on the size and the level of updates, Woodland Park offers homebuyers options that are more reasonably priced than some of the other neighborhoods in the area. According to Cope, "Woodland Park is near the most sought-after areas when you’re moving farther north in the city, but it's more affordable than those areas."
Woodland Park youngsters in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade travel about two miles to Monroe Elementary School, while older students travel about eight miles to John Marshall Enterprise Middle School for fifth through eighth grades. And ninth through twelfth graders attend John Marshal Enterprise High School where the principal, Jeanne Ambriz, received the Sam and Charolet Shirley Outstanding Principal Award in 2021 for her successful efforts in coordinating online teaching strategies.
When they're not in school, Woodland Park kids have a choice of green spaces close by. Flower Garden Park, located within the neighborhood, was as the name suggests, once the proposed location of OKC's first botanical garden. Though it lost out to the location that is now Will Rogers Park, and it no longer has a garden, Flower Garden Park remains a lovely bit of nature where visitors can walk their dogs, play a pick-up basketball game or burn off some energy at the playground.
A little farther afield - about one mile - Woodland Park residents can spend time at the fifteen-acre Memorial Park, one of the oldest parks in Oklahoma City. Located at the corner of N Classen Boulevard and NW 36th Street, the park features basketball and tennis courts, a large playground, walking paths and a sprayground - think backyard sprinklers on steroids - which is a fabulous cool-off spot for the kids during the blazing Oklahoma summers. If dodging water cannons isn't high on your list of fun activities, you can sit and relax as you listen to the peaceful gurgle of the park's Memorial fountain, erected in 1928 to honor the soldiers of World War I. Memorial Park is also the flagship location of the Oklahoma City Boys and Girls Club, which provides programs that support 400 children and teens each day.
Homebuyers shouldn't have to sacrifice a good location for a reasonable price when looking for a new home. And in Woodland Park, they don't.
