Charming neighborhood near the buzzing Plaza District
Once an outlying Oklahoma City suburb, Youngs-Englewood is now a quaint enclave within the city's renewed urban core. “The area has seen quite a bit of change. It’s really coming back huge,” says John Dunning, whose Trolly Stop Record Shop sits on Pennsylvania Avenue, the neighborhood’s eastern border. Though Youngs-Englewood’s turn-of-the-century streetcar tracks are long gone, its 100-year-old houses and grassy, median-centered boulevards are reminders of the city’s past. Residents today can enjoy what downtown OKC and the nearby Plaza District have to offer. Buyers will find classic Tudor Revival and Craftsman bungalow-style homes at prices lower than the city's average.
Tudor Revival and Craftsman bungalow styles
Mature trees stretch their long limbs over the neatly gridded streets and open grassy lawns here. In keeping with other historic OKC neighborhoods, Youngs-Englewood has a mix of 1920s and 1930s brick Tudor Revival homes and Craftsman-inspired bungalows with an occasional American Foursquare sprinkled in. Though most of the neighborhood’s houses are three-to-four-bedroom, single-family homes ranging in size from around 1,000 to 2,000 square feet, homebuyers can also find some duplexes throughout the area. In some cases, homeowners here have converted their detached garages to studio apartments for extra guest space or rental income. Prices range from $125,000 to $400,000 with buyers paying $200,000 on average over the past year.
Shopping, dining and entertainment at Plaza District
Plaza District, a vibrant, hip locale full of restaurants, shops, art galleries and entertainment venues, is only a mile away. Residents can walk to Aurora for a latte in their pet-friendly backyard seating area or catch a high-caliber musical at the Lyric Theatre. Local gamers try to beat the Super Mario Bros. high score at Up-Down Arcade Bar. Back in the neighborhood, Nic’s Grill is worth a stop for one of their scrumptious burgers but expect a wait. “They might have 13 or 15 stools inside. People stand in line to go in. Sometimes it’s quite long. It’s kind of a ritual here. A lot of people say it's the best burger around,” says Dunning, who’s also a lifelong OKC resident. His Trolly Stop Record Shop is a regular haunt for vinyl collectors and music lovers who stop by for its weekend concerts. To stock up on the essentials, residents head to the nearby Walmart Neighborhood Market or Whittaker’s Foods.
An elementary school within walking distance
Youngs-Englewood youngsters can attend Hawthorne Elementary School before moving on to Taft Middle School. Both schools earn C-minus grades from Niche. Older Students can attend C-rated Northwest Classen High School, the alma mater of country singer Vince Gill, whose statue has pride of place in front of the school. For families interested in private education, Rosary Catholic School, founded in 1927, is just outside the neighborhood.
Walking paths and community art at McKinley Park
Residents can head to McKinley Park to enjoy some green space or shoot a few hoops with their friends. It offers a playground, soccer field, basketball courts, and a walking path that loops around the grounds. During a stroll, parkgoers can admire the colorful “Plains Pioneers” mural on the west side of the park's stone community center building. Created by local artists, the mural is meant to symbolize the spirit of the local community.
Getting around Oklahoma City
Residents here make use of their concrete driveways, usually driving around town. While sidewalks are minimal, residents can walk to the local businesses along Pennsylvania Avenue. Cyclists can ride through the middle of the neighborhood along the bike-friendly NW 12th Street or go north and south along Villa Avenue. Bus stops line Pennsylvania Avenue and NW 16th Street. Downtown OKC is about 3 miles east and Will Rogers World Airport is about 8 miles south.
