Beginnings as a retreat
A south Chicago suburb that developed around a prestigious golf course, the village of Olympia Fields started as a country retreat in the late 1800s for Chicago’s elite to escape the bustling downtown crowds. Located about 30 miles south of downtown Chicago, the village is on the Metra commuter rail line, and there are still some houses that hearken to the days when Olympia Fields was just a place in the country to get away from it all.
The Metra is a great way to go to downtown Chicago from Olympia Fields without the busy traffic.

Development of the country club
The Olympia Fields County Club was founded in 1915 and has hosted major professional tournaments, including the 2003 U.S. Open and the 1997 U.S. Senior Open. It contains two 18-hole courses, North and South. The North Course is considered one of the best in the country, while the South Course is ranked in the top 10 in the state. The major PGA tournaments have been held on the North Course. “The anchor of Olympia Fields is the golf course,” says Susan Jenner, a broker with Baird and Warner with almost 25 years of real estate experience selling in the south suburbs. “My son worked one of the tournaments there, and we got on the Metra in Flossmoor, and the next stop was Olympia Fields, and it was like you stepped into a time machine.” The Metra station serves as the course’s western border. One of the iconic features of the course is the Tudor-style clubhouse that features an 80-foot-high clock tower. Private cottages are also located close to the clubhouse for use by members of the club or their families.

Other recreation options
The Irons Oaks Forest Preserve is home to various wildlife and wildflowers to explore. There is an option to walk the trails and observe nature or take on the 40-foot climbing tower that requires strategy and determination to get to the top. Similar skills are needed to conquer the high ropes course, which is an excellent team-building exercise. Bicentennial Park is the place to go in the winter with a sledding hill, but the park also has a playground, three soccer fields, two baseball fields and a sand volleyball court.
