One thousand daffodils and homes enveloped in nature
A drive on Goldcrest Drive reveals shaded streets flanked on both sides by towering trees, including firs and oaks. During the warmer months, daffodils are seen throughout the community, in a continuous effort to beautify the area and add to the vegetation of the greenbelt. “We’ve been planting about 1,000 gold daffodils a year,” says Alfonso. “Gold because it reflects the name of our community, and it helps to deter deer.”Developed over 20 years, from the 1970s through the early '90s, only 179 homes comprise the neighborhood. Due to the fixed number of properties, few come up for sale, with some still owned by the original residents. “In the section where I live, we have several neighbors who’ve been here since ‘87 or ’88,” says Alfonso. Split-levels and ramblers typically have an interior space of around 1,600 to 1,700 square feet. Extended driveways and two-car garages are the standard. Most homes sit on quarter-acre lots and up. “It’s nice so you don’t feel like you’re right on top of your neighbors.” Depending on condition and square footage, homes cost between $530,000 and $775,000.
Founded by the residents, the Block Watch Program gains support from the local police department. It operates like a typical neighborhood watch, with a leader chosen to report any suspicious activity to the police liaison. “We don’t have a lot of crime here, but the program aims to let people know that we are watching, and we don't tolerate crime here. It’s also a good way to get to know your neighbors.”
Nature trails and proximity to beaches
The Goldcrest Neighborhood Park includes a modest mulched play area complemented by a paved walking path that spans the community. The neighborhood's south end bumps up against the Grass Lake Nature Preserve. This vast green space features wetlands and dense woodlands, offering looped nature trails. "The community is just 1.5 hours away from Pacific Ocean beaches,” says Alfonso. “The beaches along the greenbelt are rocky, so you can't take your shoes off. But if you're looking for true sandy beaches like those you'd find on the coast of Florida, places like Ocean Shores, Westport or Long Beach on the Peninsula are where you want to go."Nearby amenities at Capital Mall and local eateries
The neighborhood’s location strikes a nice balance—close enough for convenient shopping and businesses without the hassle of heavy traffic. Safeway is just minutes away, near the Capital Mall area along Cooper Point Road, where many other shops and eateries are located. The dining scene mainly consists of national restaurant chains, with a few local spots, including Brew City Pizza West Olympia. A community staple since 1982, this family owned pie shop specializes in hand-crafted pizzas and regional craft beers. Along with the iconic Starbucks locations, Northwest Grind Olympia and Café Au Lait provide morning snacks and beverages. For retail shopping, there’s a Nordstrom Rack, Target, REI and TJ Maxx. The area also features the Cinemark Century Olympia movie theatre.Bus stops along Cooper Point Road
Cooper Point Road NW houses numerous fare-free Intercity Transit bus stops. Highway 101 leads to the Olympia Regional Airport, about 16 miles away.US-101 also connects to Interstate 5, providing convenient commuting to neighboring cities and regions, including Tacoma, Seattle and Portland. To reach the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac), continue northeast on I-5 for 55 miles.Top-rated schools and a campus on 1,000 acres
Education can begin at Julia Butler Hansen Elementary, which earns a B-plus Niche score, and continue at Thurgood Marshall Middle School, which earns an A grade. Capital High also receives an A grade and has a Performing Arts Center, a freestanding building that also features performances independent of the school. “The public schools are all within walking distance, which is convenient for families,” says Alfonso. Post-secondary education can begin at Evergreen State College, a liberal arts institution that sits on 1,000 acres. The campus has an Organic Farm open to the public and beachfront access along Puget Sound.
