Indian Creek
Assorted mid-to-late 20th century homes
The housing in Indian Creek is mostly made up of single-family homes built between the 1960s and 1990s. These homes tend to be midsized, typically offering three to four bedrooms. Architectural styles vary, ranging from ranch-style homes and bungalows to contemporary two-story builds. Many homes back up onto the wooded areas and creeks that run through the neighborhood, providing a sense of seclusion even though it’s not far from the city center. Home prices in Indian Creek are in line with most east Olympia neighborhoods, with most selling for between $400,000 and $600,000.Watershed Park's nature trails
There are a few block-sized public parks in the neighborhood, like McGrath Woods Park and Margaret McKenny Park, that feature playgrounds, basketball courts and short, wooded walking loops. Locals looking to enjoy a bit of nature don’t have to leave Indian Creek — they can head over to 153-acre Watershed Park on the west side of the neighborhood and go for a walk or run along its miles of trails in temperate rainforest. Woodland Trail on the north side of the neighborhood is a popular 5-mile bike trail that connects to both Lacey and central Olympia. Less than a mile west of the neighborhood, Capitol Lake and the Washington State Capitol Building and Campus are popular with runners and bikers and host some of the area’s most popular festivals and events, including the Capital Lakefair. Indian Creek itself, after which the neighborhood is named, runs through parts of the community and provides a natural buffer between properties.Olympia High's Freedom Farm
Most students in the neighborhood attend Olympia’s highly-rated public schools. Madison Elementary has a B-plus on Niche, while both Reeves Middle School and Olympia High School have As on the site. Olympia High runs a popular Freedom Farm program that allows students to grow vegetables on a nearby farm for school cafeterias in the district.Lacey shopping and downtown Olympia restaurants
Indian Creek itself does not have a commercial district, but residents are a short drive from several shopping and dining options. Central Lacey is located just 2 miles east of the neighborhood and features multiple supermarkets and a variety of big box stores and smaller chains, along with a mix of chain and locally-owned restaurants. Just a mile northwest of Indian Creek, the Downtown Olympia Historic District offers an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants and boutiques. The vibrant downtown area is also home to the Olympia Farmers Market, which is held Thursday through Sunday from April to October.Interstate 5 and Intercity Transit
The neighborhood is located near major roads like Pacific Avenue and Martin Way, which provide access to downtown Olympia, Lacey and the surrounding areas. It’s also bordered by Interstate 5, which connects the city to Seattle and Tacoma. “Luckily,” says Smith, “there’s a lot of tree cover between the neighborhood and the highway, so noise isn’t too much of an issue.” Intercity Transit operates bus routes that connect Indian Creek to other parts of Olympia and Lacey, though most routes require transfers downtown to reach more distant destinations.
