Grids of traditional homes from 1920 to midcentury
Minimal traditional homes and bungalows were built from the start of the 1920s through the 1940s. “The neighborhood is full of character, and it’s not uncommon to see houses painted in vibrant colors,” Reed says. “People are happy to express themselves, so it’s not cookie-cutter; it’s a place you go to create.” Minimal traditionals are priced between $325,000 and $450,000, while bungalows list between $490,000 and $590,000. From the 1950s through the 1980s, ranch-style homes, along with traditional midcentury homes were constructed. Prices range from $365,000 to $770,000. Midcentury homes have low-pitched roofs and are priced from $450,000 to $625,000.Nature trails and water views at Squaxin Park
Mission Creek Nature Preserve spans over 37 acres and has more than a mile of crushed rock trail accessible from bicycle-friendly roads. Nearby, Friendly Grove Park’s 15 acres include a playground, tennis court and paved walking trail that loops around its soccer field and skate park. Nature trails varying in length from under a mile to nearly 2 miles weave throughout Squaxin Park’s 314 acres. Some sections of the trail run out to the beach, overlooking Budd Inlet and Olympia to the south.Roosevelt Elementary to Tech Prep at Olympia High
Olympia School District serves the neighborhood, including the A-Niche-graded Roosevelt Elementary School. “If you want more of a natural walk through the trees, there are parks all around Roosevelt Elementary where many people will pass through,” Reed says. Reeves Middle School and Olympia High School both also receive A grades from Niche. The high school offers various college-credit earning pathways, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses and Tech Prep, which are Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses provided through the school’s partnership with South Sound Community College.Olympia’s year-round farmers market
Since 1975, The Olympia Farmers Market has been held downtown from morning to mid-afternoon. The market is open from Thursday through Sunday during “High Season,” from April to October. November to December the market is only open on Saturdays and Sundays for through the holiday season. From January through March, vendor booths are only open on Saturdays. Over 100 vendors sell handmade crafts, produce and baked goods, including the neighborhood’s San Francisco Street Bakery, which became a market member in 1990.Commutes to the state Capitol and Intercity Transit
East Bay Drive Northeast runs through the neighborhood’s western side, connecting the community with Downtown Olympia, where the state Capitol is located. Intercity Transit bus stops line Puget Street NE, Pine Avenue NE and Bigelow Avenue NE, bridging the community with downtown. Trails and dedicated bike lanes guide cyclists along local thoroughfares, including Puget Street NE, San Francisco Avenue NE and State Avenue NE. Interstate 5 is the closest major highway and travels to both downtown and nearly 50 miles northeast to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, or SeaTac, as it is known locally.Handmade bagels, specialty brewing and downtown businesses
For over 30 years, San Francisco Street Bakery has made dough from scratch for its bagels, pastries and artisan bread. Fourth Avenue, downtown, houses various restaurants and bars, such as Well 80 Artesian Brewing. As previous pioneers believed, the restaurant and brewery operate under the motto “It’s the water,” crediting Olympia’s wells for the beer’s distinct flavors. Specialty stores, such as Last Word Books & Press and the closest full-service grocery store, Ralph’s Thriftway, also are on Fourth Avenue.
