Northern neighbor of Washington’s Capitol
The sound of traffic around Washington’s capital fades heading into the Northeast Olympia neighborhood, where grided streets are lined with homes. “Life moves slower here. It’s small enough that you can still know neighbors and be comfortable walking downtown and experiencing what Washington has to offer,” says Dustan Reed, a broker with Keller Williams Realty Puyallup, who has over three years of experience.
North East Olympia is located just a few miles north of the State Capitol Building.

Grids of traditional homes from 1920 to midcentury
Minimal traditional homes and bungalows were built from the start of the 1920s through the 1940s. “The neighborhood is full of character, and it’s not uncommon to see houses painted in vibrant colors,” Reed says. “People are happy to express themselves, so it’s not cookie-cutter; it’s a place you go to create.” Minimal traditionals are priced between $325,000 and $450,000, while bungalows list between $490,000 and $590,000. From the 1950s through the 1980s, ranch-style homes, along with traditional midcentury homes were constructed. Prices range from $365,000 to $770,000. Midcentury homes have low-pitched roofs and are priced from $450,000 to $625,000.

Handmade bagels, specialty brewing and downtown businesses
For over 30 years, San Francisco Street Bakery has made dough from scratch for its bagels, pastries and artisan bread. Fourth Avenue, downtown, houses various restaurants and bars, such as Well 80 Artesian Brewing. As previous pioneers believed, the restaurant and brewery operate under the motto “It’s the water,” crediting Olympia’s wells for the beer’s distinct flavors. Specialty stores, such as Last Word Books & Press and the closest full-service grocery store, Ralph’s Thriftway, also are on Fourth Avenue.
