Alta Vista
'A complete mixture of houses' in Alta Vista
Homes line the narrow, meandering streets of Alta Vista, with pine and poplar trees shading the neighborhood. The neighborhood's oldest houses date from the early 1920s, but buyers will find a wide range of options. “You’ve got a complete mixture of houses,” says Natalie Bass, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “You might have a Spanish-style house next to something completely different. There’s a little more charm in the neighborhood compared to some others nearby.” Cottages and farmhouse-style homes with varying design influences were built in the first half of the 20th century and can go between $200,000 and $500,000. Ranch-style houses from the 1960s and 1970s sell between the mid-$200,000s and mid-$300,000s.Highly rated Opelika City Schools
Located in the Opelika City Schools district, Alta Vista is zoned to Southview Primary for kindergarten through second grade and Northside Intermediate for third through fifth. Southview receives an A grade from Niche, while Northside gets an A-minus. Students then head to Fox Run School for sixth grade, which opened in 2023 and has yet to be graded, before attending B-plus-rated Opelika Middle and A-minus-rated Opelika High. The Opelika City Schools system offers dual enrollment programs with nearby Auburn University, 8 miles from Opelika, as well as the University of Alabama and Southern Union State Community College.Floral Park's hyped renovations
Floral Park abuts Alta Vista, and residents can walk along the quiet neighborhood streets to the park. When renovations are complete, the park will include new turf fields, an inclusive playground and a splash pad. “Floral Park has always been good but now even more so,” Bass says. “There’s a lot of hype for the renovations.” A mile away, kids and parents alike can ride the “Rocky Brook Rocket” miniature train and enjoy the playgrounds at Municipal Park. But longtime Opelikans almost exclusively refer to it as “Monkey Park,” as eight spider monkeys lived in the park and entertained residents for nearly 25 years until they were transferred to the Montgomery Zoo in 1980. Golfers in the neighborhood head to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National, which has hosted PGA Tour events and has three 18-hole courses.Shopping and dining in downtown Opelika
The heart of Opelika, downtown is a mile from Alta Vista. Residents head downtown for a night out or a weekend afternoon, with local restaurants and boutique shops lining the blocks. Restaurants like Zazu Gastropub and Dough Pizzeria sit next to stores including Taylor Made Designs south of the railroad tracks that slice downtown in half. Breweries and distilleries, including Red Clay Brewing Company, have opened in the more industrial northern portion of downtown. Big box stores like Target and Home Depot populate the Tiger Town Shopping Center nearly 4 miles away, while the Piggly Wiggly a little over a mile from the neighborhood is the nearest spot for groceries.Enjoying the Opelika Songwriters Festival
Residents of Alta Vista have access to Opelika’s community events, which often attract thousands of attendees and visitors. The Opelika Songwriters Festival is held each spring, with more than 80 performances over the four days of the event. Past headliners have included KT Tunstall and Toad the Wet Sprocket. The city also takes its holidays seriously, and the local chamber of commerce helps put on events like Snopelika. The holiday parade and tree lighting in downtown Opelika are highlighted by artificial snowfall in the town’s Courthouse Square.Atlanta is 100 miles away via I-85
Alta Vista sits roughly a mile from downtown Opelika with access via North 10th Street. While residents can walk or bike downtown — North 10th Street has newly paved sidewalks, and Floral Street has shoulders that bikers can utilize — the area is car-dependent. The East Alabama Medical Center is a major area employer 2 miles away, while Auburn University also employs many residents of Opelika 8 miles west. Interstate 85 runs south of downtown Opelika, 2 miles from the neighborhood. Atlanta is 100 miles northeast, and many residents head to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for air travel due to its many nonstop destinations.
