60s-era ranch homes in Highland
Preston Street cuts through the middle of Highland, with cul-de-sacs extending off the main road. 1960s-era ranch homes line the neighborhood’s residential streets, shaded by tall trees. Homes are priced more modestly than some surrounding neighborhoods, with a median sales price of $259,900 compared to the city’s median of $330,225. The ranch-style houses of the neighborhood start in the low $200,000s and can go up to the mid-$300,000s.Riding the "Rocky Brook Rocket" at Municipal Park
Less than a mile down the street from Highland is Municipal Park, a local landmark of Opelika. The park offers rides on the “Rocky Brook Rocket,” a miniature train that has chugged through the area since 1955. “We’ve got a small, miniature train that’s a homage to our roots,” says Leigh Krehling, the community relations officer for Opelika. “Kids love it and adults love it, everyone can ride it.” But locals also call it “Monkey Park,” a nod to its history as the home of eight spider monkeys that entertained Opelika children. Though the primates were donated to the Montgomery Zoo in 1980, the enclosure remains, populated by a wooden statue where they once swung. Almost 2 miles away, Floral Park is being renovated and will feature new turf fields and an inclusive playground once work is complete at the end of 2024. Meanwhile, the Opelika Sportsplex is just over 3 miles from the neighborhood and features a fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, basketball courts and multipurpose sports fields.Highly rated schools in Opelika
The Opelika Public Schools District serves Highland, and kids can start at Jeter Primary. The kindergarten through second-grade school receives an A grade from Niche, while Morris Avenue Intermediate is graded a B-plus. Fox Run School opened in 2023 for sixth graders and has yet to be given a grade. Students can then head to B-plus-rated Opelika Middle and Opelika High, which receives an A-minus. Opelika High and its longstanding crosstown rival, Auburn High, first met in football in 1917 and have played each year since 1933. Thousands attend the clash of sister cities every fall. Opelika is also home to Southern Union State Community College, while Auburn University is about 8 miles away and enrolls over 34,000 students.Downtown Opelika eateries and entertainment
Highland has easy access to the eateries and entertainment of downtown Opelika. Restaurants like Zazu Gastropub and Dough Pizzeria populate along the south side of the rail line that runs through the city. But the north side of the track offers a handful of breweries and shops like 10,000 Hz Records. The nearest grocery store is Winn-Dixie, a little over a mile away. But more shopping is located on the opposite side of the city. The Tiger Town shopping center offers a Target, Home Depot and fast food options, while big box stores sit along Pepperell Parkway.Snopelika and Opelika Songwriters Festival
Residents of Highland often head into downtown Opelika for the events it hosts. Festivals and holiday celebrations such as Snopelika — which features a parade and the lighting of the tallest Christmas tree in Alabama — draw crowds into town. One of the largest is the Opelika Songwriters Festival, held annually over a spring weekend in the city. Thousands attend more than 80 performances over the four days, with past headliners including Toad the Wet Sprocket and KT Tunstall. “The events bring the community together in remarkable ways,” says Laura Sellers, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Preferred Real Estate.Easy access to I-85
Just over a mile from downtown, Highland is walkable and bikeable to the center of town. Though Lee-Russell Public Transit also offers a “Dial-a-Ride” service to schedule a pick-up and drop-off, most residents rely on their cars for transportation. I-85 is roughly 3 miles from the neighborhood, leading 100 miles northeast to Atlanta. Most residents head to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for air travel, as it offers nonstop flights to over 200 destinations.
