American Revolution history beside suburban streets in Tappan
Tappan is a quaint suburb in the Hudson Valley with a rich history that stretches back before the Revolutionary War. Buyers can browse midcentury modern homes a couple of blocks from George Washington’s military headquarters and one of America’s oldest taverns, the Old '76 House. “Tappan has great schools, and it’s close to everything around the Valley,” says Adam Blankfort, an 8-year Realtor with the Ask Adam Team of Corcoran Baer & McIntosh Real Estate. “It’s a very small community with one restaurant and a boutique shop; for other needs, people go to the river towns a few minutes away.” Commuters can also quickly access the Palisades Interstate Parkway, a major Hudson Valley highway and the northern boundary of Tappan.
The Tappan community has homes of all shapes and sizes of residents to choose from.

Postwar homes and the Tappan Historic District
Most homes in Tappan are raised ranch-style, bilevel and Colonial Revival, and were built after World War II in hilly neighborhoods with tree-lined streets. Tappan's oldest homes are in the 85-acre Historic District. “It’s a mixed market. You do have historic homes in Tappan, but there are not many,” says Blankfort. “You have a lot of raised ranches and some luxury options, but not as many as in surrounding towns.” Prices range between $500,000 and $1 million, depending on the home's size and age.

Locals try Tappan Golf Center or Tallman Mountain trails
Tappan Golf Center offers a public driving range, batting cage, go-kart track and a restaurant. A few miles east, residents often head to several vibrant state parks perched by the Hudson River. Tallman Mountain State Park features a public pool and hiking trails with sweeping views overlooking the river, and folks can try cross-country skiing here in the winter. History buffs can visit the DeWint House, a landmark Dutch Colonial home built in 1700, which served as a temporary headquarters for George Washington at several points in the war.

The Old '76 House for drinks, dinner and history
The Old ’76 House is a locally loved historic tavern. It serves an upscale menu of steak, seafood and venison, and hosts live music. Local lore dates the building to 1668, and records show the tavern opened in the 1750s. During the Revolutionary War, it served as a prison for the notorious spy Major John Andre.
“A lot of homeowners go to Nyack or Sparkill, close to the river, to get to other incredible restaurants across Rockland County,” says Blankfort. In Sparkill, Kantina serves Asian fusion dishes and craft cocktails. In Nyack, the Nyack Fresh Market offers groceries while The Breakfast & Burger Club serves specialty omelets, burgers and pancakes.
The Palisades Center in West Nyack features four levels of shopping with over 200 stores.
