Older homes on larger lots with easy access to amenities in South End
Featuring 50-year-old houses on quarter-acre lots, Oregon City’s South End neighborhood contrasts the tightly packed, newer houses you’ll find along the city’s southern border. It also offers easy access to schools, parks, and other amenities that make it a livable community.
Riverview ranch-style and split-level homes built after the baby boom
Most of South End’s houses went up during the 1960s and 1970s, when the post-war baby boom and the development of Washington County’s Silicon Forest Technology Corridor brought almost 400,000 new residents to the Portland Metropolitan Area. The neighborhood’s ranch-style and split-level houses sit on 9,000- to 10,000-square-foot lots that often leave room for small yards, tall trees and a little patio area for relaxing outside. Some houses offer a view of the Willamette River, while others offer an above-ground pool and a hot tub. And they’re all located on winding subdivision streets with sidewalks on at least one side and space for on-street parking. Three- and four-bedroom homes in the South End neighborhood fetch $450,000 to $600,000, which is less than what the newer houses that you’ll find in other parts of Oregon City might cost.
B-rated public schools and the Oregon City Service Learning Academy
Even though South End isn’t the southernmost part of Oregon City – a distinction it lost in the early 2000s when the city started developing its Hazel Grove-Westling Farm and Tower Vista neighborhoods – it boasts its fair share of amenities. This neighborhood is home to the Oregon City Service Learning Academy, a public charter school offering high school students a service-based curriculum that helps them become an integrated part of their community. Students who grow up in the South End neighborhood also have an opportunity to attend John McLoughlin Elementary School, Gardiner Middle School, and Oregon City High School – all of which received a B or a B+ on Niche.com.
Athletic amenities at Chapin Park, and waterfall views at Canemah Park
Regardless of where children go to school, though, they can all get exercise at Chapin Park – where you’ll find a simple playground with a few slides, four softball fields and two soccer fields youth teams use for their sporting events and a picnic shelter with a barbecue grill that you can reserve for your next family barbecue or birthday party. This neighborhood is also close to Oregon City’s Old Canemah Park, which offers picnic shelters in a forested area with views of the Willamette River and a viewpoint where you can see Coffee Creek Falls.
Authentic Mexican food at Don Chuy, and the Pure Bliss Bakery and Café
The neighborhood is also home to Don Chuy Mexican Restaurant, which maintains a near-perfect 4.9-star rating on Google because of its authentic food and friendly service. This restaurant is just down the street from the Pure Bliss Bakery and Café, a local favorite serving pastries like a sausage, cheese, and jalapeno scone, a bacon and egg croissant, and cinnamon rolls with maple or raspberry glazes.
