‘70s and ‘80s split levels and condos by Silver Lake Country Club
Homebuyers in Silver Lake South can find a variety of architectural styles, including brick ranch-style homes, split levels and modern traditional homes. Many single-family homes include driveways, garages and medium-sized front yards. Most of the houses in the neighborhood are also “two-story homes, with many of them being developed in the late to early ‘90s,” Yasin says. Homes typically range from $300,000 to $500,000 and offer spacious living areas, three to four bedrooms and between two and three bathrooms. Many also feature outdoor living spaces such as decks and patios. Condos and townhouses are also available for those who want to avoid yard maintenance, and they can range from $150,000 to $290,000. The townhouses typically feature two or three bedrooms and various amenities such as attached garages and community swimming pools.Orland School District 135
For kindergarten through second grade, students often attend Prairie Elementary School, which receives an A rating from Niche. Students then move on to Liberty Elementary School for grades three through five. Liberty receives a B-plus rating from Niche and is recognized by Apple as a distinguished school for continuous innovation in learning, teaching and the school environment. Jerling Junior High, just to the north, also receives a B-plus rating and has a variety of extracurricular activities for students in grades six through eight, such as cooking club, drumline and anime club. Residents of Silver Lake South are split between two high school districts and can go to either the A-plus-rated Carl Sandburg High School or the A-rated Victor J. Andrew High School.Veterans Park and Cachey Park
When locals wish to get outside on a nice day, several pocket parks are spread around Silver Lake South. Veterans Park, next to Kruse Education Center, has a playground, plenty of green space, a baseball field and basketball, volleyball and tennis courts. For local athletes there is Cachey Park to the west, which has two basketball courts, three tennis courts and four soccer fields. Many little league soccer teams play here.Orland Park groceries and restaurants
When it's time to stock up on groceries, locals have plenty of options, with Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market, Jewel-Osco and Aldi all nearby. Orland Market and Bakery is a Middle Eastern grocery store in the neighborhood with fresh pita, hummus and shawarma daily. For eating out, head south to The Patio, an informal BBQ outfit known for ribs, slow-cooked meats and familiar sides. Try La Michoacana Azteca for something sweet, like ice cream, fruit blends, popsicles and yogurt. The neighborhood is also a mile from Orland Square, a popular shopping mall with three anchor stores and over 150 shops. The convenience of US Route 6
The neighborhood's southern end has US Route 6, also known as 159th Street. This is the main road for the neighborhood and where many locals start their 29-mile commute to downtown Chicago. It is also home to a multitude of bus stops for those who wish to utilize public transportation. If locals are looking to book a flight, the Chicago Midway International Airport is a 15-mile drive to the north. The Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital is about 5 miles north of the neighborhood.Silver Lake Country Club
Silver Lake Country Club, the area’s namesake, is on the neighborhood’s north side and is one of the busiest spots around. “It’s a big golf area,” Yasin says. The club has been around since 1939 and is home to 45 holes of golf in the form of three spectacular courses that each present a unique challenge to golfers of all skill levels. The club also offers leagues for men, women and children ages 8 to 13. This course is one of the reasons why Orland Park is sometimes referred to as “the national capital for golf,” Yasin says.
