Attractive midcentury homes, many located along canals
Clear Lake’s signature neighborhood, Isle of Catalina, is situated at the southern end of the lake. Built in the late 1950s and ’60s, the neighborhood’s developers sought to emulate great European canal cities like Venice. Along the canals that provide easy access to the main attraction for boaters and watersports enthusiasts of all kinds are a collection of midcentury homes typically priced from the mid-$300,000s to as much as $500,000. Boats floating in the backyards are a common sight. Elsewhere around the lake, ranch-style homes with similar standard features such as private driveways, attached garages and large yards are typically priced from the md-$200,000s to the low $400,000s. The Catalina Isle condominium complex offers an affordable multi-family alternative, with units priced from under $50,000 to about $90,000. An interesting feature of the neighborhood is that it is home to the Dolce Vita Resort & Spa, conveniently located along the community’s southernmost canal."One of the few skiable lakes in the downtown Orlando area"
Clear Lake is large enough to provide plenty of space for boating, kayaking and other nautical adventures. “It’s one of the few skiable lakes in the downtown Orlando area,” Warriner says. “And from a price point standpoint, it’s the most affordable skiable lake in the area. Lake access is huge for homeowners.” Anglers can fish from their boats or the bankside. Homeowners with private piers can fish the canals, and other convenient fishing spots include the boardwalk at Clear Lake Park, an amenities-filled picturesque green space. The park features a paved path for walking and biking, and exercise stations can be found along it. The park also offers a playground as well as a gazebo and picnic pavilions. On the north side of the lake, George Barker Park offers additional children’s playscapes and fishing spots as well as basketball courts. A community center in neighboring Holden Heights features a computer lab and classroom space for after-school programs and vocational training.Elementary school located in the neighborhood
Young students can attend the neighborhood’s Catalina Elementary, which features a student-to-teacher ratio of 16-1, and nearby Memorial Middle, both C-rated schools by Niche. Older students can attend Jones High, a B-minus-rated school that offers the International Baccalaureate Programme and extracurricular clubs for future business leaders, future farmers and gamers.
I-4 provides quick access to upscale mall, downtown Orlando
The Mall at Millenia can be accessed directly from Interstate 4, which forms the neighborhood’s southern edge. I-4 also leads directly into downtown Orlando just minutes away, giving residents convenient access to work in the Central Business District. The thriving city center also houses cultural attractions, highlighted by the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. SunRail commuter and Amtrak stations are available nearby. Both the mall and downtown are accessible via LYNX buses that run through the neighborhood. John Young Parkway, which forms much of the neighborhood’s west side, provides additional access to the Greater Orlando region. The city’s international airport is about 15 miles away.Upscale Mall of Millenia among several nearby retail and dining destinations
Oley’s Kitchen & Bar B Que is a neighborhood eatery known for its jerk chicken and pulled pork sandwiches. The casual restaurant fuses Caribbean and American Southern cuisine. “The neighborhood is kind of in a food desert. There aren’t a lot of options, but you’re not far from a lot of options,” Warriner says. “You’re so close to downtown and all its great options, and SoDo, which has such a great food culture.” A Walmart Neighborhood Market is located in the neighborhood’s northwest corner, but most residents live south of the lake and have easy access to a large concentration of dining and retail options located about 2 miles south at the Mall of Millenia, a sprawling contemporary collection of shopping centers that includes everything from big-box retailers such as Target, Costco and IKEA to upscale destinations such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Apple Millenia. “The mall was developed to be Orlando’s upscale shopping experience because we have so many travelers from all over the world,” Warriner says. “It was built in an area that was not previously as desirable, but the mall purchased the land and developed it. It’s THE high-end mall.” Featured eateries include The Capital Grille, Keke’s Breakfast Café and NaraDeva Thai.
Crime
The CAP Index gives the neighborhood an 8-out-of-10 rating. That typically signifies high crime, but the areas south and east of the lake are primarily residential areas where crime is not common. The neighborhood’s northwest corner does border some of the city’s higher-crime areas.
