Passionate community leading positive changes in Taft
Once a rural town, Taft has developed over the decades but retains a strong community. Passionate residents under the umbrella of Take Action for Taft have successfully created positive changes in the neighborhood — notably, a new park. "That’s what I'm trying to do — make it more friendly for the younger kids so they can grow up and say, 'We hung out at the park and had a great time'," says Dickie Owens, a lifelong resident and president of the TAFT group.
Manufactured, ranch, and bungalow-style homes
This is a mostly calm space, save for the occasional train and planes from the nearby Orlando International Airport. Tidy streets are filled with smaller homes, including manufactured homes, ranch-style homes and gable-front bungalows. Front yards are occasionally fenced in with well-kept, short lawns. The area has been popular with investors, who, in some cases, are converting these homes into multi-family units for steep rental income. Home prices range from about $150,000 to about $330,000.
Aviation and aerospace programs at Orange County Public Schools
Though on Orlando's outskirts, kids are still part of the Orange County Public Schools system. Many younger students are within walking distance of Sally Ride Elementary School, which earns a B-minus from Niche and sits on the neighborhood's east side. Honoring its namesake, the school's magnet program immerses students in the aviation and aerospace fields with clubs and competitions, school events and a STEM lab. Upper-level schools are about 4 miles away. Judson B. Walker Middle School earns a C-plus, while Cypress Creek High, an International Baccalaureate school, earns a B.

New and well-loved green spaces
The neighborhood will soon open a new centrally located playground, featuring green spaces, walking paths and ADA-accessible play features. Owens and other locals advocated for the new space to replace the old ball field. It may serve as a future space for events such as trunk-or-treat, he says. Taft Neighborhood Park is already well loved by the community. It features a basketball court, playground and picnic area with an open grassy space in between. Tall pine trees and canopy coverings provide plenty of shade.
Camaraderie at the Taft Community Center
Events and programs build camaraderie at the Taft Community Center. Locals sit family-style for the Thanksgiving feast, courtesy of Orange County commissioners. "I always like the camaraderie, being around people — it's an extension of family," says Julian Dominy, a Taft resident since 1952. The Community Center is a longstanding feature. Seniors First provides lunch and activities such as bingo for older adults from Monday through Friday. The center also meets community needs with food giveaways and occasionally, backpack drives for kids.
Shops and restaurants are few, Dollar General has the basics
Shopping and dining options are limited, but Dollar General offers the essentials. "That was a huge boon for the people of Taft when it opened because they carry a little bit of everything, including groceries," Dominy says. Aldi and Sam's Club are about 3 miles away. Dunkin' and Domino's Pizza are the only restaurants in the immediate area. About 4 miles away, Sharon's Homestyle Cookin' serves southern classics such as chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy. The community is also just about 4 miles from the Florida Mall, a major shopping hub drawing millions of annual tourists with over 250 shops, restaurants and attractions, including the Crayola Experience theme park.
Direct routes into Orlando
Residents may get to some amenities on foot, although sidewalks are not widely available. Locals are advocating for new sidewalks on Fourth Street, the main east-west road in the neighborhood. Orlando is 8 miles north, and residents have a direct route via South Orange Avenue. LYNX buses stop along the route and connect to the nearby SunRail station. Orlando International Airport is a busy global connector 5 miles away with nonstop flights to over 160 destinations.
TAFT helps to address crime
Taft has a low CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, although residents report some issues with drug-related crime. The TAFT group holds regular meetings to address crime and other community matters.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
