A compact but lively business district anchors Thornton Park
It takes less than 10 minutes to walk across Thornton Park, but, in that time, you may four bars, a French bakery and an art gallery. Dozens of businesses operate in the compact neighborhood located on the other side of Lake Eola from the Central Business District. Thornton Park’s business district is surrounded by blocks of early 1900s homes built along oak-lined brick streets.

Blocks away from cocktails or croissants
Restaurants and bars line East Washington Street and continue down Summerlin Avenue. “You can dine out every night [in a week] and easily not eat at the same place,” says Stan Madray, a Realtor at Scott Martin Realty who specializes in Thornton Park real estate. Anthony’s Thornton Park is a decades-old staple for New York-style pizza, and Cavo’s Bar & Kitchen specializes in cheesesteaks and hoagies. Madray moved to Thornton Park from the suburbs eight years ago, and he says it’s difficult to give up a lifestyle where a French croissant or a ramen bowl is a block away. The neighborhood also has several bars, including:
Burton’s, a neighborhood mainstay since the 1930s with pool tables and 20 TVs
Kaleidoscope, hangout with beer, wine and trivia
The Falcon Bar & Gallery, a dimly lit beer joint with local artists’ works on the wall
Sprinkled among the bars and restaurants are barbers, hair salons and a gym. “You can have a whole day of eating, drinking, taking care of yourself and working out,” says Robert Soviero, executive director of the Thornton Park District Main Street Program. Locals can shop at Publix, a couple blocks west of Thornton Park. A free underground parking garage makes it easy to load up the car with groceries.

Monthly wine walks in Thornton Park
The Thornton Park District puts on weekly, monthly and annual events. Browse food trucks and arts and craft vendors every Friday at the TPD Night Market or be one of the 1,000 people who stroll the neighborhood during the monthly Wine & Art Walk. Attendees buy wristbands to visit more than 20 local businesses for wine samples while catching live music. Annual events include the Halloween Block Party, which draws costumed residents and attendees from across the city. Plus, the Thornton Park District sponsors events at Lake Eola Park, such as the Orlando Farmers Market on Sundays. “Every month, there’s another 5K, gathering, walk for charity or something happening at Lake Eola,” Soviero says.
The Thornton Park Neighborhood Association organizes other events to get neighbors together to:
Sample local restaurants and bars during the annual Taste of Thornton Park
Socialize with neighbors at planned happy hours
Walk the streets to clean up trash, cigarette butts and palm fronds

Many of the colorful bungalow homes in Thornton Park were built in the early 1900s.
Vintage homes protected by a historic district
Homes and townhouses often date to the early 20th century, with Craftsman houses and Mediterranean designs lining the streets. Properties are squeezed onto tight lots, but the yards are usually lively with blooming gardens, mature oaks and leafy palms. Driveways often extend past the side of homes into the backyards, with detached garages. Homeowners without driveways or garages often park along the curbs, which usually lack parking restrictions. Much of the neighborhood is included in the Lake Lawsona Historic District, meaning exterior renovations require approval from the city’s Historic Preservation Board. Recent single-family home sales vary from the lower $600,000s to $1.4 million. There has only been one recent townhome sale, which fetched about $1 million.
Drive, walk or catch a free bus downtown
Residents can walk to restaurants and bars, a perk considering parking along East Washington Street and South Summerlin Avenue can be limited. Most locals use cars to get to work. It’s a quick commute to the Central Business District, a 1-mile drive via Robinson Street or a 20-minute walk through Lake Eola Park. The free Lymmo bus picks up passengers on Central Boulevard and takes them to downtown. The Central Business District is not only a hub for office workers; it also has a nightlife scene boosted by dive bars, nightclubs and music venues. Many stay open until 2 a.m., a difference compared to Thornton Park, Madray says. “Our side is getting quiet around 10 p.m.” The neighborhood connects to Florida state Road 408, a toll road that runs east to west through the Orlando region.
Lynx buses, including the Lymmo routes, connect residents with downtown.

Dogs romp at Constitution Green
Residents live within a mile of Lake Lawsona Park, where bald cypress and live oaks shade folks lounging on its bank or walking the sidewalk along its waterfront. A few blocks away, dogs play in the fenced area of Constitution Green. Lake Eola Park has a playground and a 1-mile trail a block from the neighborhood.
