With a front-seat view of scenic Mt. Rainier, Orting lives up to its reputation as a small town with a big view. Orting’s history dates back to the middle of the 19th century, transforming from a small farming community to a booming hub for daffodil bulb production in the 1920s to a city known for producing Christmas trees. Terrafin real estate agent Brenna Smith, who has sold 16 homes in the area, says, “It’s a very cozy and quaint community that feels very welcoming, and has the most incredible view of Mt. Rainier,” and adds being able to see the mountain close up is a big draw for prospective homebuyers. Some of the homes from the bulb boom of the 20s can be seen throughout the town, including cozy three-bedroom houses with gabled roofs and a covered front patio that gives them both curb appeal and a classic charm. Craftsman-style homes have wide, sun-facing windows that let in plenty of natural light for your plants. Newly built homes throughout Orting won’t break the bank. "There are spacious properties that sit on lots up to 8,000 square feet that range between $450,000 and $650,000," Smith says.
With Mt. Rainier only 30 miles away and the city bounded on each side by the Puyallup and Carbon Rivers, there’s plenty of nature to experience. However, several parks around the city are close by for some fresh air. Residents can grab a morning pick-me-up from Lil J’s Java and go for a morning stroll along the Foothills Trail that goes through North, Central and South Main parks along the city’s main thoroughfare of Washington Ave North. Dogs can make new friends at the Orting Dog Park. Parents can watch their kids play soccer in the expansive field at Whitehawk Park or take them to Hansberry Park to let them burn off energy on the playground.
Children won’t have to go far to get to class, with public schools in the Orting School District nearby. Students can start their education at Orting Primary School, which scored a C score from Niche, before attending Orting Middle School, with an overall Niche grade of C+. Orting High School, with a B- minus grade from Niche, boasts a 93 percent graduation rate among its students, and most of its student body is enrolled in classes with access to college credits. Students can also find their niche and make new friends in one of the many extracurricular clubs, ranging from Esports to an anime club and much more. Parents can take their children to the Orting Library to check out books for their summer reading lists.
Local shops and eateries flock to Washington Ave, giving residents a variety of places to eat for a quick lunch or a drink with friends. Start the weekend with brunch at Tim’s Kitchen and head to Angel One Thrift & Boutique afterward for some antique glassware or a new painting for the living room. When planning a trip to Mt. Rainier, pick up camping essentials from Big J’s Outdoor Store. Pioneer Village Shopping Center has everything from fast food options to a Safeway for grocery needs. To buy local, head to the Orting Valley Farmers Market throughout the summer for fresh produce and fruit from local farmers and items sold by local vendors.
There are plenty of opportunities to meet neighbors and other community members during annual events like the 4th of July festival and the tree lighting ceremony. With so much natural beauty around, Orting can be someone's gateway to life's next adventure.
