Rumple Minze at the 5-mile marker
The neighborhood of Millers Bay was aptly named after the bay next door, a popular launching point onto Lake Winnebago. Once a sprawling landscape of farmland and marshes, the area is now packed with established midcentury homes within walking distance of Menominee Park and Emmeline Cook Elementary School. “It’s an established, quiet neighborhood with a good portion of starter homes,” says Stephanie Brehmer, a resident of Millers Bay and Realtor with First Weber Realtors. “I mean, the amount of water we’re on is a huge draw. Not to mention the parks and wooded areas.” As an outdoorsy resident herself, Brehmer dotes on the community’s beloved Battle on Bago fishing tournament that takes place right on the lake. “It is the absolute coolest thing that’s right in your backyard. Where else are you having a bonfire on a frozen lake or hiding Rumple Minze for the fishermen at the 5-mile marker?”

Midcentury homes and waterfront properties
Millers Bay was primarily established in the 1950s, comprised of midcentury ranch-style homes, split levels and Colonial Revivals along the point jutting out into the bay. “Most homes on the waterfront have been owned for a very long time,” Brehmer says. “Some of them are even generational. So obviously, a lot of people live on the water. But it’s the ranch-style homes that tend to flip over more quickly.” Private docks and panoramic views of Millers Bay are standard on the shoreline, while farther inland, a mix of attached and detached garages are decorated with modest gardens and sprawling lawns. Sidewalks and mature trees line the way from Menominee Drive to Doemel Street, where families can walk their elementary students to school. Basketball hoops in the driveway pair with backyard trampolines and pools for summertime recreation. Altogether, properties range in price from $200,000 to $315,000, slightly above average for Oshkosh.

Fourth of July fireworks at Ames Point
Menominee Park is the largest green space in Oshkosh, within walking distance of Millers Bay. Pratt Trail spans the park's perimeter, while Siewert Trail borders the bay and is easily accessible from Menominee Drive. “I can actually see the trail from my back deck,” Brehmer says. “It curves around the peninsula, so you can walk to Ames Point. That’s the best place to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July.” In addition to its popular trails, the park also features a boat launch, a small-scale beach area, ball courts, and a renovated playground. At its heart is the Menominee Park Zoo, where new animals are leased yearly for a unique viewing experience. Farther south, Riverside Park is situated along the Fox River and provides access to the Oshkosh Riverwalk. Aside from fishing, residents flock to the shoreline for notable city-wide festivals, including the annual Waterfest concert series on the riverfront downtown.

Walking to Emmeline Cook Elementary School
Families in Millers Bay are zoned for the Oshkosh Area School District, beginning at Emmeline Cook Elementary, which earns a C-plus on Niche. “My daughter walked to Emmeline Cook, and my husband also walked there when he was that age,” Brehmer says. “Many parents walk to drop their kids off if they can, especially since the new middle school is farther away.” Vel Phillips Middle School opened in 2023, replacing Webster Stanley and Merrill Middle. Niche has not yet graded the school. Transportation is not provided to Vel Phillips Middle, a 2-mile commute from the neighborhood. However, bus service is provided at Oshkosh North High School, which earns a B on Niche. Students seeking more robust community engagement in and outside the classroom can participate in “Communities” leadership courses. The school district also provides an eAcademy online program, allowing students to earn their diplomas virtually or in a hybrid setting.
Educational opportunities abound at Emmeline Cook Elementary School.

Beck’s Meats and a Friday Fish Fry
The city of Oshkosh offers a wealth of small businesses and big-box shops, many of which are located within a mile of Millers Bay. Red’s Piggly Wiggly is the nearest grocer, situated on Murdock Avenue. But the Pick ‘n Save on Jackson Street is considered more of a hub—where neighbors are likely to bump into each other on a Saturday morning. On North Main Street, Beck’s Meats is a longstanding institution, supplying fresh products to restaurants across Lake Winnebago since 2007. As for dining out, The Chalice is a locally owned bar-restaurant serving hearty American fare right down the street. Deb’s Spare Time is one of many Oshkosh staples known to host a Friday Fish Fry. From perch to whitefish, the full menu of fresh catches is one of the many perks of living on Lake Winnebago.

Bikeable routes throughout Millers Bay
Millers Bay is located 2 miles from Downtown Oshkosh, but most daily stops are within a mile radius along Murdock Avenue and North Main Street. “We have great public transportation, and the city overall is very bikeable,” Brehmer says. “If you prefer to pedal, Millers Bay is conducive to that.” GO Transit buses are not active within the neighborhood itself, but walkable stops are offered along Hazel Street and Murdock Avenue. Bike routes interconnect throughout the city, with starting points on Menominee Drive and New York Avenue that link onto Main Street. The nearest emergency room is located at Aurora Medical Center Oshkosh, about 5 miles west. Commuters rely on Interstate 41 to reach Green Bay and Appleton, particularly when heading 20 miles north to Appleton International Airport.

Battle on Bago in the backyard
Though Brehmer describes Millers Bay as a quiet neighborhood most of the time, hundreds of fishermen flock to the area each February for the iconic Battle on Bago ice fishing competition. “It’s a well-oiled machine,” she says. “We have ATVs pick up all the fishermen who park farther away, but some actually launch elsewhere and travel over by boat. Living 2 blocks from Menominee Park, you’ll see the boat traffic pile up for every tournament.” Down at Wittman Regional Airport, EAA AirVenture is the largest gathering of aviation specialists in the world. “There’s 750,000 people trying to get in and out every July, so local traffic definitely has to make concessions for that,” she continues. But according to locals, it’s well worth it for the air shows, workshops and interactive displays held throughout the week.
