Between Bago’s bays
The community of Woodland Park rests between South Asylum Bay to the north and Millers Bay to the south. Though the neighborhood is almost entirely landlocked, residents are hardly far from Lake Winnebago’s sprawling parks and scenic overlooks. A mix of apartment complexes and single-family homes line the residential streets, where mature trees shade sidewalks leading to a locally-owned market and a nearby elementary school. From Fourth of July fireworks at Menominee Park to competitive ice fishing on Millers Bay, some of the city’s most boisterous festivities are mere blocks from home. A suburban enclave with a variety of housing options, Woodland Park allows for both convenience and a few lake life perks.

A mix of apartments and quaint single-family homes
Woodland Park is made up of apartments and single-family homes nestled between Bowen and Hazel streets. Multi-family complexes including Coachlight and Captain’s Cove flank the west side of the neighborhood, while ranch-style homes and split levels lead the way to Millers Bay. “There are pockets of apartments and condos in Oshkosh, just like in any other city or small town,” says Stephanie Brehmer, a Realtor at First Weber in Oshkosh. “A lot of families live in the apartments after relocating from other cities, states and countries who are looking for a fresh start. And it makes sense, this is a really accepting and culturally diverse community.” While apartments make up about half of the properties in the community, it’s common to spot residents mowing the grass and tending to their lawns. Single-family homes provide paved driveways with attached garages and ample yard space, mere blocks from Lake Winnebago. Throughout the area, home prices generally range from about $150,000 to $350,000, but waterfront homes on the bay or a canal have sold for up to $1 million.

Halfway between “Carp Pond” and Menominee Park
About 2 miles south of the neighborhood, Menominee Park is Oshkosh’s largest green space, spanning 109 acres. Pratt Trail borders the park's perimeter while Siewert Trail stretches almost 2 miles along the shore of Millers Bay to Ames Point. A boat park and modest beach area accompany ball courts closer to the park’s southern entrance. But at the heart is Menominee Park Zoo, where new animals are leased each year for a unique viewing experience. About 2 miles north, Asylum Point Park sits along Sherman Road. “All the locals call it the Carp Pond,” Brehmer says. “There’s a beautiful nature trail and we take our dog out there all the time for hiking. So many people don’t even know it exists! This beautiful, sparkling lake and all around you are wooded trees.” A boat launch and walking path lead to the Asylum Point Lighthouse that overlooks South Asylum Bay.

Wisconsin communion at Battle on Bago
Each February, competitors line the trails of Menominee Park for Battle on Bago, the city’s iconic ice fishing tournament. “Fishing is massive here, and Wisconsin is definitely known for drinking and partying,” Brehmer says. “During the tournament, it’s not unusual to stop around Lake Winnebago’s shanties and have a Jell-O shot at 8 a.m. We call that Wisconsin communion.” Later in the year, guests pack the park for Independence Day fireworks on Millers Bay. Woodland Park residents can walk less than a mile on Murdock Avenue to reach Ames Point, one of the best spots on the bay to catch the show. EAA AirVenture is considered the largest gathering of aviation enthusiasts in the world, and it takes place each summer at Wittman Regional Airport. There, visitors can check out air shows, workshops and interactive displays throughout the week.
