Thompson-Berry Park has a soccer complex and lake ideal for fishing, though boats aren’t allowed. The Ben Hawes Park offers hundreds of acres of natural beauty and opportunities for fun. There are miles of trails for hikers and joggers, along with an 18-hole golf course. Playground equipment and a GaGa Ball Pit are also available to ensure kids have plenty to do. “It’s a huge draw—especially for families,” says Brown. “They’ve even got a runway for soapbox derby races.” The Western Kentucky Botanical Garden hosts plants and people alike with live music, instructor-led Tai Chi and over eight acres of colorful flowers and vegetation.

Mi Ranchito is a laid-back Mexican-American cantina where visitors order enchiladas, burritos and margaritas in a colorful atmosphere. The Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport is a 3-mile drive south.

In addition to seasonal amateur golf tournaments, Ben Hawes Park hosts the annual Owensboro Lions Club Soap Box Derby—a local tradition since 1934. Competitors between 7 and 20 years old build and ride their box cars down a paved, 800-foot track for prizes and local glory.
Audubon-Bon Harbor is located northwest of downtown Owensboro.
Important to know
Flood zones are common in certain neighborhood sections, particularly the northern region and closest to the river. “If you’re moving here, you’ll want to avoid moving into any of the flood zones,” says Brown. “Outside of that, it’s a great area.”
