Rolling hills and highways in Hillcrest
On the southeastern end of Owensboro, Hillcrest appears similar to its neighbors but sets itself apart in distinct ways. It's home to many major highways and minor roads that have become just as important to the city's traffic flow. Several recreational spaces surround the neighborhood, and one of the city's largest commercial corridors is just a few miles away. Many students are within walking distance of their schools. The community has a much more relaxed atmosphere than the bustling energy of downtown, but nearly the same number of conveniences are within reach.
The community has a mix of mid-20th-century homes and new construction.

Red-brick homes and new subdivisions
Across the rolling hills of the neighborhood, grassy lawns speckled with decorative shrubs and trees stretch out in front of rustic red-and brown brick homes. The community has a mix of mid-20th-century homes and new construction, but Realtor Glenn Ashby of RE/MAX Professional Realty Group says a good portion is from the 1960s and 1970s. Options range from ranch-style and split-level houses to New Traditional homes. Ashby says these properties are typical for the city now, "but they were custom-built, higher-end homes for their time period." Some custom elements, like occasional Tudor-inspired half-timbering or Craftsman-style columns, remain unique to the area. Prices are diverse, ranging from $150,000 to $600,000, but generally fall between $230,000 and $400,000, depending on condition. In the Hunters Ridge subdivision, new construction costs between $800,000 and $1 million for 4,000 to 7,000 square feet of space and higher-end amenities, like wine cellars and saunas.
Styles range from ranchers to split-level houses and New Traditional homes.

Fairview Drive reduces traffic on highways
New Hartford Road becomes Highway 231, and Highway 60 and Interstate 165 intersect at the community's center. While traffic along these thoroughfares occasionally causes noise and delays, they keep residents connected to the entire city and beyond. Another primary street is Fairview Drive, which becomes Settles Road. Recent construction along the closest major commercial corridor has made the smaller roads more useful, Ashby says. "Right now, they got Route 54 all tore up so you can't get through it. They're widening the road, and it's going to be that way for about two years," he says. "So, people are using Fairview and Settles to get to those businesses because they run parallel to 54, and even after they've widened, they'll still be used as access roads."
Steak dinners at Briarpatch Restaurants
Dairy Queen, Donatos Pizza and other chains line New Hartford Road, with a few smaller businesses one street over. Briarpatch Restaurants has been an Owensboro mainstay for more than 50 years, specializing in steak and seafood. Next door, The Spot Coffee and Finery sells small-batch artisan coffee and delicate trinkets, such as healing crystals and locally made pottery. About 2 miles away, Kentucky State Route 54 has many options, including Walmart, Meijer, Kohl's and Menards. Shoppers can dine at Salsarita's Fresh Mexican Grill, Beef 'O' Brady's or Ole South Barbecue.

The Adkisson Greenbelt Park, a 15-mile multi-use trail, passes by the park. The greenbelt also leads to Lake Forest Community Park and Yewells-Heritage Park, which has a large fishing lake.
