A small neighborhood with a big farmers' market
Midtown East is smaller than other neighborhoods in Owensboro, but it holds just as much within its borders. Homes share the space with shops, restaurants, parks and a few schools. Downtown is less than 1 mile north, and two major highways are within 2 miles. However, the community's claim to fame is that it's home to one of the city's crown jewels: the Owensboro Farmers Market. Residents get first pick of locally sourced produce and handcrafted goods. After a day of browsing the booths, people return home to diversely styled houses along lush, tree-lined streets.
The biggest front porch in all of Kentucky
The neighborhood is directly beside downtown Owensboro, so popular restaurants, stores and entertainment centers are nearby. One of the most notable destinations is the Owensboro Regional Farmers Market, held three times a week from August to October. "We are just about as local as local can get," says Shannon Hutton, president of the market's board of directors. "All seller products have to be grown or produced in the region and handcrafted. You will not see a Pampered Chef reseller here." Farmers and artisans come from over 10 counties to sell their goods, and locals flock to the market to buy one-of-a-kind items and fresh ingredients. The market also partners with other institutions to create inclusive events for kids and adults. "Everyone is welcome here. I wanted this market to be the biggest front porch in the state of Kentucky," Hutton says. When not shopping at the farmers' market, residents can buy groceries at Gene's Health Food or IGA Supermarket. The neighborhood also has small businesses, from consignment shops to tattoo parlors. For dining out, Lizzie's Diner is a no-frills café open for breakfast and lunch, while Gary's Drive-In is a kitschy all-day spot for a classic burger and milkshake combo. Chain restaurants line Frederica Street, and Wesleyan Park Plaza has an assortment of coffee shops and laidback eateries. For entertainment, residents head to the bowling lanes or the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art downtown.
New construction alongside diverse 20th-century homes
Apartments and homes sit along gridded streets in Midtown East, where businesses and parks are located throughout the neighborhood. Streets are filled with mature trees and bright flowers found on lawns and medians. Sidewalks line most of the neighborhood, except for a few places in the northeast. Bungalows, ranch-style homes, duplexes and Craftsman-style houses are the most common styles. However, Cape Cods and even a few cottage-style homes with distinctly steep catslide roofs occasionally make it into the landscape. Investment properties cost between $55,000 and $100,000, while move-in-ready homes typically sell between $110,000 and $290,000. Most homes are from the 1950s through the 1980s, but there is also some new construction. These homes usually come in New Traditional styles, and prices are in the $300,000s.
Natural beauty and city traditions
Residents in Midtown East have access to many parks and recreational areas. Cap Gardner Park celebrates natural beauty with a calming display of large-bowed trees and blooming flowers. Legion Park bursts with activities and over 23 acres of wooded space. Kids play together on the playground and splash park while groups gather to walk the paved trails or start a game of pickup basketball. Just south is Owensboro Country Club, a member-only facility with an 18-hole championship golf course, a short par-3 course, an outdoor pool and pickleball courts. Outside the neighborhood, the Adkisson Greenbelt lets hikers and cyclists peruse the city, while the YMCA of Owensboro Daviess County's indoor fitness areas ticks up in popularity during the winter.
The neighborhood is adjacent to the Rosehill and Elmwood cemeteries, where an annual tradition honors the city's history. "Every fall, the cemetery has the Voices of Elmwood, where they take you through the cemetery and tell stories about people's lives. It's well attended by locals," says Glenn Ashby, a Realtor with RE/MAX Professional Realty Group who's familiar with the area. Wagons take visitors to selected graves where period actors perform monologues about the lives and legacies of deceased citizens buried there.
Higher education is abundant around Midtown East
Along the neighborhood's southern border is Newton Parrish Elementary School, which has an A-minus Niche score. Students start here before heading 1 mile west to Owensboro Middle School, which has a B-minus. After that, students attend Owensboro High School, which is also adjacent to the neighborhood. The high school has a B-plus score, and Niche rates it as the second-best public high school in Daviess County. Both the middle and high schools have fine arts programs that were awarded the Kennedy Center Award for Excellence.
Several higher education institutions are near the neighborhood. Brescia University is a B-rated private Catholic college in downtown Owensboro, while Kentucky Wesleyan College is another faith-based option inside the Apollo neighborhood. The college earns a C-plus rating. Owensboro Community & Technical College offers two-year instruction right inside the neighborhood. The community college earns a B-minus.
No buses, no problem
Although the neighborhood has no public transit, several main thoroughfares, like Frederica Street and Kentucky State Route 54, are easy to get to. The neighborhood is also within 2 miles of Highway 60 and Interstate 165. Traffic and noise can get dense around Route 54, Frederica Street and East 18th Street, but the highways are far away enough to avoid causing these issues. For flights, Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport is under 4 miles away.
