The Northwest Side neighborhood is just north of downtown Owensboro.
The destination of many important Owensboro attractions
Northwest Side’s name is on the nose — the neighborhood is on the northern side of Owensboro and the western half of downtown. One of the first neighborhoods to form after the city was established, the community is home to some of Owensboro’s most significant landmarks and attractions. Especially along the riverfront, the community attracts thousands of locals and visitors alike with large-scale events and expansive multi-use green spaces. While the area is a hub for tourism, diverse housing options and widely available community services prioritize residents’ needs. A neighborhood alliance oversees residential streets, and residents are around the corner from many major employers and primary thoroughfares.
English Park is named after Peter B. English.
Multi-use parks and community involvement
Parks, big and small, are prominent in Northwest Side. English Park is in the northern part of the neighborhood and offers a public boat ramp and dock to boaters and anglers. Kids play together on the playground while groups picnic nearby. The park also has an open-air amphitheater for concerts and other events. “They have a big bass tournament there in the fall, and there are activities there for the city air show and Fourth of July, too,” says Glenn Ashby, an Owensboro Realtor at RE/Max Professional Realty Group. More centrally located, Kendall-Perkins Park offers lighted sports courts and a seasonal spray park. It’s also home to the Dust Bowl basketball tournament, an annual tradition since 1973. Other green spaces in and around the neighborhood include Moneta Sleet Jr. Park, James Mason Park, Goose Egg Park, Owensboro Moreland Park and Smothers Park. Directly south of the community are Owensboro Sportscenter and Edge Ice Center. The sports center, one of Owensboro’s most historic buildings, hosts everything from sporting events to concerts, while Edge Ice Center opens for public ice skating every Friday evening.
Northwest Side also has many community centers. The H L Neblett Community Center is home to the Northwest Neighborhood Alliance and offers various programs, from summer camps to after-school tutoring. Across the street, the Audubon Area Family Development Center supports, educates and provides resources to families. Demographic-specific centers and non-profits include the Senior Community Center of Owensboro and St. Benedict’s Women and Families Services.

Shopping Owensboro’s seasonal market
Various stores, restaurants and commercial businesses are located throughout the neighborhood. Thrifty Dollar Store sells discount essentials, while Frank Miller & Son Sporting Goods helps anglers stock their tackle boxes. Between automotive stores and car dealerships are spots like JB Sweets, a local bakery, and Mechanicsville Neighborhood Kitchen. Closer to downtown, The Brew Bridge serves a rotating selection of beer brewed in-house, and Lure Seafood & Grille offers artfully decorated seafood dishes inside an upscale establishment. Both an IGA grocery store and the Owensboro Regional Farmer’s Market are about 1 mile away from the neighborhood, but the farmer's market is only open three days a week from August through October.
Residents of Northwest Side can enjoy exhibits at The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.
Big Whiskey and a bluegrass hall of fame
The community practically overflows with attractions. The RiverPark Center, the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, the Owensboro Convention Center and more are within walking distance. One of the most important attractions is The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum. “We’re trying to make ourselves the Nashville of bluegrass music,” Ashby says. In fact, it could be argued that Owensboro already is, as The International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) was founded in Owensboro in 1986, and the Hall of Fame remained in the city even after the IBMA relocated to Nashville. Since its creation, the museum has added rotating exhibits and expanded its list of Hall of Fame inductees. It hosts live shows and competitions, like the Kentucky State Fiddle Championship. A new attraction is also coming downtown. Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant and Bar will move to 243 Frederica Street, a property Ashby sold himself. The restaurant will open in March 2025, pairing classic American fare with over 100 varieties of whiskey.

ROMPtober and free concerts all around downtown
Northwest Side encompasses a large portion of downtown Owensboro, meaning residents are at the heart of the city and its events year-round. In May, the International Bar-B-Q Festival draws tens of thousands to the riverfront, as Owensboro is the self-proclaimed "Bar-B-Q Capital of the World.” During summer, 2nd Street hosts a Fam Jam on Friday evenings, featuring a variety of live music and food vendors. On Saturday evenings is Live on the Banks, a free concert series, and Sundays are for Games on the River at Smothers Park. The Annual Downtown Fine Arts Show happens each July, featuring displays from local artists and casual bites from Fetta Pizza, one of the event's collaborators. In early fall, people set up lawn chairs at English Park to watch the Owensboro Air Show or lay picnic blankets on the Owensboro Convention Center’s lawn for Groovin’ on the Green. The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum hosts ROMPtober, a bluegrass-themed take on Octoberfest that blends craft beer with live jam sessions and music workshops. Throughout the rest of the year, the city plans charity walks, marathons and holiday-specific events like the Trail of Treats.
Craftsman homes can be found in the Northwest Side neighborhood.
Home styles and price points for everyone
Housing in Northwest Side is diverse, from architectural style to pricing to a property’s age. The neighborhood has an eclectic mix of homes from the late 1800s all the way to the 2010s. Historic bungalows and cottages sit beside mid-20th-century, ranch-style homes and late 1900s townhouses and condos. Craftsman-style, Cape Cod and New Traditional influences also appear within the landscape, primarily on larger lots. Prices range from $40,000 to $260,000, based on a home’s condition and square footage. Completely remodeled properties by the river see significant price jumps, typically costing between $360,000 and $680,000. Within the community are also a few apartment complexes and assisted living facilities. Single-family homes have smaller lots with trimmed grass lawns. Mature trees pepper decorated yards, and well-maintained sidewalks line most streets. Some lots are elevated, with concrete or stone steps leading up to the front door.

Owensboro High School partners with local university
Students attend Foust Elementary School, which is inside the neighborhood and within walking distance of many homes. The school earns a B rating from Niche. Next is Owensboro Middle School, which has a B-minus rating, followed by Owensboro High School. With a B-plus rating, the high school offers dual enrollment courses through Brescia University, which sits along the neighborhood’s eastern border. Brescia is a B-rated private, Catholic university specializing in business and social work degrees. The university partners with many city industries and nearby professional organizations to provide students with off-campus learning opportunities.
West 2nd Street is a major shopping area near downtown Owensboro.
Getting around with 2nd and 4th streets
Since Northwest Side includes a significant portion of downtown Owensboro, many residents don’t have long commutes to the city’s employers. West 2nd and 4th streets are major east-west thoroughfares, connecting to Highway 60 and Kentucky State Route 144 in about 3 miles. Frederica Street and nearby J R Miller Boulevard are two primary north-south roads, with the boulevard connecting with the Owensboro Bridge over the Ohio River. While these busy roads occasionally bring excess noise and traffic, they are vital hubs for commuters and local events. Public transit is unavailable, but Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport is less than 5 miles away.
