A quiet, tree-lined suburb
Hickory is an unassuming tree-shaded neighborhood populated by mid-century homes. It's about 3 miles southwest of Paducah's downtown. The neighborhood draws first time homebuyers because many of its houses sell for below $200,000, which is Paducah's median home price. Cradled within the fork of U.S. Route 62 and U.S. Route 45, the neighborhood provides residents easy access to retail, dining and greenspaces. But Paducah doesn't just draw homebuyers who desire urban amenities with a small-town feel. “Compared nearby cities like Nashville and St. Louis, the taxes, insurance, cost of food, groceries and gas in Paducah are relatively cheap," says Realtor Kartik Patel, who sells houses in the neighborhood with Keller Williams Experience Realty. Paducah's top employers include the hospitals, Beltline Electric and Four Rivers Nuclear Partnership. Retirees are also drawn to the city. "The southern hospitality causes people to fall in love with the place. We get a lot of people that retire from the east and west coasts," says Realtor Jan Mathews, who sells houses in the neighborhood with RE/MAX Realty Group.
Sandwiches at Loopy Larry's and sweet treats at Red's Donut Shop
Two of the city's most historic dining options are within a mile of the neighborhood. Residents get soup, sandwiches and salads at Loopy Larry's, a local restaurant with multi-colored digs and upbeat music. Half a mile down Jackson Street, House of Grace has served chicken salads and sandwiches seven days a week since 1965. It has vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls. Also on Jackson Street, Red's Donut Shop has served warm pastries since 1955. Southern Living magazine called the business one of the best donut shops in the South. Patrons are initially attracted by the shop's reputation and classic yellow sign, but it's the hand-cut artisanship that brings people back. There are also fast food joints like KFC, McDonald's and Domino's. On the neighborhood's northern point, there is a cluster of retailers, including Harbor Freight Tools, Dollar Tree, Walgreens and Kroger.
Suburban homes built between the 1940s and 80s
The suburb is populated by single-family homes with green lawns where residents often host cookouts and toss the football around with their kids. Folks walk their dogs to Independence Park, immediately north of the neighborhood on Alben Barkley Drive. The dog park includes a gazebo, picnic tables and climbing boulders for the children. The city is about 65 miles northwest of Kentucky Lake, where some residents own second houses or rent Airbnb's to go boating and fishing for the weekend. “The Kentucky Lake is a big draw," Mathews says.
