Lower Town
Etcetera Coffeehouse and Paducah Beer Werks
Lower Town's restaurants are defined by their casual atmospheres and welcoming vibes. Founded by two locals in 2006, Etcetera Coffeehouse doubles as a gallery for local artists. Its back patio also includes a garden where cats like to roam. “Etcetera is a great place to run into neighbors and friends,” Watkins says. "People love to hang out there." Once a Greyhound station, Paducah Beer Werks serves pizza and sandwiches with cold glasses of craft beer. Professional bands and drag artists perform on the brewery’s stage multiple times a month. Both businesses strive to get as much of their ingredients and other supplies from local sources as possible. The neighborhood borders the downtown, so residents can walk to more dining options along Broadway Street. One popular spot is The Cork Room, which offers self-serving wine machines and bountiful charcuterie spreads. On Harrison Street, Troutt Old Time General Store and Market sells seasonings, sandwiches and country-style home furnishings. A Kroger is less than 3 miles west of the neighborhood. Local artisans and planters sell their wares at the Paducah Homegrown Farmers' Market every Saturday from April through October. Every third Saturday includes live music and crafts activities. The Lower Town Arts and Music Festival and more
“I moved to Lower Town because I wanted to be close to all the events and activities,” Watkins says. The Lower Town Arts and Music Festival is the neighborhood's most popular annual event. The city shuts down the intersection of Seventh and Madison to make room for art vendors, food trucks and about two dozen bands and solo performers. Lower Town is home to multiple art galleries run by artists who live upstairs, like Char Downs, who moved to Paducah in 2004 as part of the Artist Relocation Program and shows her paintings, sculptures, prints and murals at Pinecone Gallery and Studios. The National Quilt Museum is on the neighborhood’s eastern border and has curated more than 250 exhibitions over the past 30 years. The nationally designated museum displays quilts from around the world and delves into Paducah’s history as a textile town. Two blocks east of Lower Town, acclaimed muralist Robert Dafford illustrated the city’s past and present with a collection of murals along the flood wall. These riverfront murals are the backdrop to downtown events like BBQ on the River, an annual celebration that draws up to 50,000 visitors, who come for the live music and smoked meat. For a night at the movies, the nonprofit Maiden Alley Cinema shows classic and independent films less than half a mile southeast of the neighborhood.Bungalows, duplexes and Victorian homes
Most Lower Town residents park on the streets, which are lined with sidewalks and light poles. Wood-exterior bungalows built between the 1860s and 1920s are priced from $170,000 to $310,000. Brick duplexes and triplexes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are priced from $170,000 to $430,000. Brick and wood-exterior Victorian homes are priced from $130,000 to $530,000.Raymond C. Schultz Park and Bob Noble Park
Raymond C. Schultz Park overlooks the Ohio River, two blocks east of the neighborhood. Schultz Park is home to the 340-foot Paducah Transient Boat Dock, where boaters can fuel up or make reservations to leave their boats there overnight. The city was built at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio rivers, making both popular options for fishing, tubing and water skiing. Schultz Park hosts Paducah’s annual Independence Day Celebration and fireworks show. The 145-acre Bob Noble Park is less than 3 miles west of Lower Town, and it has a skate park, an outdoor amphitheater, picnic shelters, multiple playgrounds and access to the Greenway Trail, which weaves throughout Paduca’s neighborhoods. Families come to the park in the spring and summer to enjoy outdoor movie screenings and concerts.McNabb Elementary, Paducah Middle and Paducah Tilghman High
McNabb Elementary is less than 2 miles west of Lower Town and has a C-plus Niche rating. Less than 3 miles southwest of the neighborhood, Paducah Middle School has a B-minus Niche rating. The B-plus Niche-rated Paducah Tilghman High School is over a mile south of Lower Town. The school's curriculum prepares kids for careers in fields like health science, automotive engineering, welding, computer science, interior design and e-commerce.Getting around Paducah
