A historic arts district

With its music festivals, art galleries, and homes over 100 years old, Lower Town is the cultural and historic core of Paducah. The neighborhood was annexed by the city in 1836 and developed soon after, but many of its original homes were burned during the Civil War. Most of Lower Town’s current houses were built in the five decades following the war and due in part to its rich architectural tapestry, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. By that time, however, many of the homes were falling into sharp decline. In the early 2000s, the city devised a plan to draw artists from around the world to move to Lower Town and renovate its houses. The Artist Relocation Program attracted over 75 residents and businesses and created the Lower Town of today: a sought-after artistic center that complements the shopping and dining atmosphere of the adjacent downtown. “The city is no longer actively bringing artists in, but artists continue to come here,” says Amina Watkins, a Lower Town resident and group travel sales manager at the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau. “All of my neighbors are younger artists.”

Etcetera Coffeehouse and Paducah Beer Werks

Lower Town's restaurants are defined by their casual atmospheres and welcoming vibes. Founded by two locals in 2006, Etcetera Coffeehouse doubles as a gallery for local artists. Its back patio also includes a garden where cats like to roam. “Etcetera is a great place to run into neighbors and friends,” Watkins says. "People love to hang out there." Once a Greyhound station, Paducah Beer Werks serves pizza and sandwiches with cold glasses of craft beer. Professional bands and drag artists perform on the brewery’s stage multiple times a month. Both businesses strive to get as much of their ingredients and other supplies from local sources as possible. The neighborhood borders the downtown, so residents can walk to more dining options along Broadway Street. One popular spot is The Cork Room, which offers self-serving wine machines and bountiful charcuterie spreads. On Harrison Street, Troutt Old Time General Store and Market sells seasonings, sandwiches and country-style home furnishings. A Kroger is less than 3 miles west of the neighborhood. Local artisans and planters sell their wares at the Paducah Homegrown Farmers' Market every Saturday from April through October. Every third Saturday includes live music and crafts activities.

The Lower Town Arts and Music Festival and more

“I moved to Lower Town because I wanted to be close to all the events and activities,” Watkins says. The Lower Town Arts and Music Festival is the neighborhood's most popular annual event. The city shuts down the intersection of Seventh and Madison to make room for art vendors, food trucks and about two dozen bands and solo performers. Lower Town is home to multiple art galleries run by artists who live upstairs, like Char Downs, who moved to Paducah in 2004 as part of the Artist Relocation Program and shows her paintings, sculptures, prints and murals at Pinecone Gallery and Studios. The National Quilt Museum is on the neighborhood’s eastern border and has curated more than 250 exhibitions over the past 30 years. The nationally designated museum displays quilts from around the world and delves into Paducah’s history as a textile town. Two blocks east of Lower Town, acclaimed muralist Robert Dafford illustrated the city’s past and present with a collection of murals along the flood wall. These riverfront murals are the backdrop to downtown events like BBQ on the River, an annual celebration that draws up to 50,000 visitors, who come for the live music and smoked meat. For a night at the movies, the nonprofit Maiden Alley Cinema shows classic and independent films less than half a mile southeast of the neighborhood.
