Walk among the pine trees
Steve Keiler remembers his grandmother's stories about their Paducah family farm and how she planted pine trees on the 250-acre property during the Great Depression. Those now-mature evergreens are the defining characteristic of the Pines subdivision, developed in 1975 by Keiler, a retired Realtor, broker and developer. "It's such a beautiful, quiet place," Keiler says. "Residents and people from neighboring communities love to walk along the narrow streets among the pines." Although there are no sidewalks, streetlights are situated on every block, and there is little traffic on the winding roads.
Brick veneers are common in this neighborhood
House vary in size in Pines. "The biggest house in the community is 10,000 square feet," Keiler says. "Most, however, are 3,500 to 4,000 square feet." The architecture is a mix, but many Colonial Revival, ranch-style and contemporary houses have brick veneers and siding. Yards start at half an acre, and homes have two- to four-car garages. Many older ranch-style houses sell for between $375,000 and $450,000. Custom builds range from $525,000 to $625,000.
Community served by two school districts
Depending on home addresses, Pines is served by the McCracken County Public Schools District or the Paducah Independent School District. Both districts allow enrolled students to change schools within the district. Concord Elementary School and Heath Middle School have A grades from Niche. McCracken County High School has an A-minus. In 2024, the high school's Future Problem-Solving Team achieved third place in the International World Finals. an academic competition that promotes critical thinking and decision-making skills by addressing hypothetical scenarios in areas such as Nanotechnology, Agricultural Industry and Global Food Security.
Locals must leave the neighborhood for shopping and dining
Pines is primarily residential, so locals must travel outside the neighborhood boundaries for shopping and dining. In nearby Fairfield, locals can dine at O'Charley's Restaurant & Bar, serving American cuisine and comfort food in a relaxed setting. Rafferty's Restaurant is a local sports bar chain that serves soups, salads, burgers and more. Another choice for locals is Kentucky Oaks Mall, which has over 100 stores and Chick-fil-A, ChinaMax and Hugo's Restaurant. T.J. Maxx, The Home Depot and a Walmart Supercenter are all within 3 miles to the northwest of the neighborhood, and Kroger is a 2-mile drive.
Walking trails and plenty of shade
Recreation is available nearby but requires a short drive out of the neighborhood. Technology Park has picnic tables, benches, a walking trail and a pond with a water feature. Locals can take their dogs to Independence Park, 2 miles to the east, which is fenced and has a separate section reserved for dog owners and their pets. There's also a gazebo, benches, picnic tables and climbing boulders. Keiler Park, located 2 miles to the east, was donated to the city by Steve Keiler's grandparents, Leo and Irene. Thanks to the dogwood and evergreen trees Irene planted long ago, it offers plenty of shade trees, a playground, four picnic shelters and a gaga pit.
Celebrate BBQ on the River
Taking in a stunning view of the Ohio River while enjoying a savory plate of barbecue is one of the highlights of BBQ on the River, an annual fundraiser celebrating its 30th year in September. The main focus of this festival is the barbecue, with over 80,000 pounds of chicken and pork cooked by local and out-of-town restaurants and barbecue enthusiasts. All vendors must choose a charity to receive a portion of the proceeds. The riverfront festival has welcomed upwards of 50,000 visitors per year for food, drinks and entertainment.
No bus lines in the community
There are no bus lines in the neighborhood, so residents primarily rely on their cars for transportation. Interstate 24 skirts the western border — which runs north into Illinois and south to Chattanooga —making commuting more convenient. Downtown Paducah is a 5-mile drive, and Barclay Regional Airport is 8 miles away. Mercy Health—Lourdes Hospital and Baptist Health Paducah are nearby in case of emergencies.
