An ever growing Texas city in Hidalgo County

The City of Palmhurst is located in Hidalgo County and is roughly 7 miles from the Rio Grande-Mexico border and 8 miles from downtown McAllen. It was once home to John H. Shary, the Nebraska businessman who planted the first large commercial citrus grove in Texas in 1915, a feat that earned him distinction as "The Father of the Texas Citrus Industry." The area is quickly growing, and its population influx includes a primarily young workforce, families and winter Texans. "People come to Palmhurst because you can still get large houses on multi-acre lots,” says J.C. Rowe, a Realtor with Signature Properties who grew up nearby. “Property taxes are also lower, so you get a lower overall cost of home ownership.” Along with its proximity to McAllen, which offers all of the best shopping centers in South Texas, it’s close to multiple parks and highly-rated Mexican cuisine.

A style for every homebuyer, from Palmhurst's Mission Revivals to contemporary builds

John Shary's home, Shary Mansion, still stands on Shary Road. And while Palmhurst homes today don't feature the mansion's 17,000 square feet, homebuyers can still find a Spanish Mission hacienda with 8,500 square feet, five bedrooms, 8 acres and a private pond priced between $800,000 and $2 million. The area also offers standalone homes on multiple acres from the late 1980s and '90s and modern subdivisions with traditional ranch, farmhouse, Mission Revival and contemporary styles. Two-bedroom ranch homes are available as low as $145,000, but most homes offer three, four or five bedrooms closer to $400,000. Rowe says the trend for the past 15 years has been new developments, like the gated Mayberry Ranch, which offers lots open to build.

Palmhurst families served by La Joya ISD

In the La Joya Independent School District, young students can attend schools such as Midkiff Elementary, which earns a C-minus rating from Niche and Rafael A. Cantu Junior High School. Rafael is within walking distance of most homes and holds a C Niche score. Students can then look forward to attending Mission High School. The high school has a C-minus Niche rating and offers a tuition-free Early College program in which students can earn a high school diploma and associate degree simultaneously. Palmhurst also benefits from its proximity to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, whose colonias program aims to provide underserved communities with accessible language and literacy education, student volunteering opportunities and economic support.

Public transportation helps commuters in and around Palmhurst

While many people own cars, locals looking for additional transportation can take Valley Metro buses. These buses have routes through Palmhurst and a central transfer hub in Downtown McAllen. Long-distance travelers will find the McAllen International Airport 10 miles southeast, along with South Texas Health System Heart. With access to multiple border crossings, including the Mission-Reynosa Bridge, residents don’t have to go far to travel internationally. U.S. Route 281 is also in the area, an artery that connects to Interstate 37 for trips north to San Antonio, roughly 250 miles away.

A "country feeling" with a bounty of retail along Route 107

Palmhurst may have kept its rural roots, but not at the cost of convenience. "With so many large homes on large lots, you have a country feel while being close to everything," Rowe says. Texas State Route 107 bisects the city and serves as a commercial hub. Fast-food chains, technology retailers, dentists and medical services line this busy strip. Locals can flip through gently used goods at Universal Thrift, find name-brand deals at Ross, and shop at big-name stores like Walgreens, Walmart and HEB for groceries and household goods. But smaller spots like El Potrillo Meat Market keep Palmhurst's small-town feel alive with fresh meat, daily staples and friendly service. Next door, locals line up for fast, fresh tacos, tostadas and Papa Asada at La Curva Taqueria. East of 107, Sal y Pimienta is perfect for a family-friendly sit-down with festive décor, authentic Mexican flavors and seafood specials. Sweet treats are up for grabs at Holy Bakery's food truck, which is the go-to for churros, ice cream and mini-pancakes. Roadside fruit and produce stands also serve to keep Palmhurst pantries full.

Quintas 4 Lunas Waterpark keeps locals cool

Palmhurst families head 1 mile west of the city to keep cool on hot Texas days at Quintas 4 Lunas Waterpark. Open on weekends from spring to fall, the park offers multiple pool areas, a restaurant, a snack bar and two bars. In the city, locals hike the SAP Nature Preserve to observe wildlife. The city has also opened Shary Municipal Park with plans to add walking trails and community event space. New residents aren’t the only ones flocking to Palmhurst. The entire community along the Mexico border is part of a prominent migration corridor for over 400 species of colorful birds and butterflies. “You can see them all over the buildings and on the electric poles,” Regina Acosta, a market research analyst for the city of McAllen. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is a nearly 800-acre refuge for hundreds of songbirds, hawks and bobcats, among other wildlife. Visitors can explore seven miles of trails throughout the park, including an elevated observation tower for birding during migration season. Just down the road, insect lovers have a real treat at the National Butterfly Center, a 100-acre expanse filled with natural trails lined with pollinator-friendly plants.

Christmas in the Park is the city's premier event

Palmhurst locals enjoy city-sponsored events like the annual Christmas and the Park, a well-attended event at Shary Municipal Park with food, music, an outdoor movie and pictures with Santa. And, of course, Downtown McAllen is just a few miles away, offering seasonal celebrations, arts and entertainments and local history festivals. McAllen hosts the largest holiday parade in Texas. Daylong festivities start with a toy giveaway at the city’s senior center, followed by an extravagant parade. Brightly illuminated floats and marching bands parade fill the streets and are narrated by celebrity hosts like Mario Lopez. Crowds chant to spin the floats around in circles as they make their way to Municipal Park on Bicentennial Boulevard for a festive carnival celebration.
