Nature retreat outside Chicago continues to grow

Only 40 minutes southwest of downtown Chicago, yet home to 15,000 acres of nature preserves and a municipal golf course, Palos Hills provides a forested escape from the city at the end of the work week. Miles of plush nature preserves, top-rated schools and one of the lowest municipal tax rates of the Chicago suburbs continue to draw newcomers to Palos Hills. “We’ve hit the second largest population increase over the last 10 years,” says Mayor Gerald Bennett, a resident of the city since the early ‘70s.

Range of housing options in Palos Hills

The streets of Palos Hills feature a variety of architectural styles, from brick bungalows, sprawling ranch-style homes and brick-and-vinyl bi-levels to multistory, modern traditional builds. Ample front yards offer space to cultivate a green thumb or place a basketball hoop, making up for the lack of sidewalks on many streets. Homebuyers can expect to invest between $300,000 and $500,000, but newer constructions may cost more. Townhouses and condo units range between $150,000 and $400,000, with many of the pricier examples occupying newly constructed buildings.

Stagg High excels in academics and athletics

Palos Hills is known for its highly rated schools. Children can attend Sorrick Elementary School, which receives a B-plus from Niche, for prekindergarten through first grade before attending Oak Ridge Elementary School for grades two through five, which earns an A and received a National Blue Ribbon award in 2023. They can move on to H.H. Conrady Junior High School before completing their secondary education at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School, both A-rated schools. Stagg High offers student athletes participation in the Southwest Suburban Athletic Conferences — one of the most successful conferences in the state — and it’s consistently recognized for its academics on a state and national level. Moraine Valley Community College occupies a southern parcel of the city. “It’s a very large campus with a lot of programs,” says Baha Joudeh of Chicagoland Brokers, who has sold 13 homes in the area.

Palos Hills: a nature enthusiast's dream

Palos Hills is rich with activities for outdoorsy types. The city's west side includes 15,000 acres of woods and forest preserves, known cumulatively as the Palos Preserves. The preserves were named an “Urban Night Sky Place” by the International Dark-Sky Association — a location with an authentic nighttime experience despite its proximity to a significant urban area. The campsites at Bullfrog Lake offer prime real estate for stargazing at night, and over 40 miles of trails allow for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing before the sun goes down. Horse owners can train and board their steeds at Palos Hills Riding Stables, taking rides into the nearby preserve trails. The Palos Hills Golf Course is a nine-hole, par-35 course open to the public on the city's eastern side. With adult leagues, tournaments and competitively priced green fees, golf enthusiasts can fine-tune their swing.
