Parrott is an isolated Virginia community along the New River
Parrott is a small community settled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in southwest Virginia. Although the camp sites along the river are often chosen due to the isolation they offer, Parrott is not as far-flung as it may seem. Proximity to Radford, Christiansburg and Virginia Tech all draw prospective homebuyers looking for elbow room and quietude to this rural community. “There’s not much out in Parrott except the mountain and the New River,” says Realtor Darin Greear with Long and Foster, who has over 20 years of experience in the area. “It’s not far from Blacksburg, but there are no schools out there – just a church, a few homes and a little bitty post office.”
Rustic home options include farmhouses and mountain cabins
Home styles in Parrott reflect the community’s rural atmosphere. “You’ll see mostly two-story farmhouses and ranch-style homes, though when you start getting up into the mountains, there are some more cabins and chalet-type homes,” Greear says. “There’s not much development at all out that way. Down near the river, there are lots with camper hookups like water and sewer, but that’s pretty much it.” Few homes have sold in Parrott in recent years. One home, a three-bedroom ranch-style house built in 1930, sold for around $150,000 in December of 2024.
Riverfront camping, fishing and golf are popular pastimes
The nearby New River is a primary source of outdoor recreation for Parrott residents. “Kayaking and tubing on the river are always popular, and so is fishing,” Greear says. “People come down from all over for the smallmouth bass and the muskie in the New River, and there are a few camping areas that cater to those visitors.” Camping sites along the river offer hookups for RVs. Hunters come to the area to search out whitetail deer and wild turkey in the nearby woods and mountains. Golfers will enjoy proximity to the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, a public 18-hole course along the banks of the river.
Belspring Road connects Parrott to Radford and Christiansburg
Belspring Road provides the community with its main regional connections. “You take Belspring Road to Peppers Ferry Road. You take a right if you’re heading to Radford, and if you take a left, you’re going to Christiansburg or Blacksburg,” Greear says. “From Parrott, it’s about 5 to 10 minutes to Fairlawn, Radford or Herron’s Landing Community center and the golf course, so even though it’s isolated, it doesn’t feel too far.” Blacksburg is home to the LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, the closest medical center. The nearest airport is Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport, nearly 50 miles east along Interstate 81.
Blacksburg High boasts state championship academics
Children in Parrott may attend Prices Fork Elementary School, located 13 miles from the area, earns a B-plus grade from Niche. Blacksburg Middle along Prices Fork Road also receives a B-plus. Blacksburg High, which scores an A, won the state scholastic bowl championship in 2024.
Essentials and restaurants are located in Radford
Although there are no shops directly in Parrott, grocery stores like Food Lion and big-box retailers like Walmart Supercenter are less than 10 miles from the community. “You can get pretty much everything you need down in Fairlawn and Radford,” Greear says. Radford’s Main Street is also lined with local shops and restaurants, including Radford Coffee Company and Long Way Brewing, a pub currently housed in a former church.
