Patton Township near State College commercial hub
Patton Township sits at the edge of State College Borough, 7 miles from downtown. This wide swath of rolling greenery mixed with planned subdivisions and farmland, sits between a rural, mountainous landscape and The University of Pennsylvania. “It is State College,” says Marc McMaster, a local associate broker with RE/MAX Centre Realty, discussing the township. “People don’t pick a township. They just want to be in State College Borough.” Many residents here work as professors and staff of Penn State or at the Mount Nittany Medical Center. Patton is 8 miles from Penn State, and residents can get there directly using U.S. Route 322. This route, which becomes North Atherton Street, is also a commercial hub with restaurants, grocery stores, retailers and other businesses.
New townhouses in Grays Pointe
State College is constantly expanding, and Patton Township is no different. A subdivision of townhouses is slated to be built in 2025 near the community of Graysdale. Most homes sit on winding streets surrounded by manicured lawns and clusters of mature trees. Sidewalks border residences close to Atherton Street, but those farther out are built back from the road with no sidewalks. Newly constructed homes and townhouses are in the new traditional style and range from $450,000 to $650,000. Others are in the split-level and ranch-style and range from $300,000 to $400,000. Townhouses range from $200,000 to $400,000.
Schools visit Boogersburg schoolhouse
The State College Area School District, which receives an A-plus from Niche, serves the area and is rated the best school district in Centre County. Students may attend either Park Forest Elementary School or Gray’s Woods Elementary School, which both earn A ratings. Students advance to Park Forest Middle School and State College Area High School, which also receive A ratings. When learning about the history of State College, schools in the area tour the Pleasant Hill School, more commonly known as Boogersburg School, in Patton. Guides from the Centre County Historical Society dress as teachers from the 1800s and give tours of the one-room schoolhouse and its grounds.
Ghost town in State Game Lands
Hidden within the dense forest of State Game Lands Number 176 is Scotia Barrens, a ghost town dating back to the 1800s. Stone ruins covered in colorful graffiti are all that remain of the iron mine and its surrounding village. The area surrounding the ruins is also significant due to its microclimate, which allows heartier plants that tolerate colder climates to grow. Hunting, hiking and bird watching are also popular in this area. Bernel Road Park and Circleville Park are the two largest parks in the area. Both parks have play structures, sports fields, covered picnic areas and open grassy areas. The Circleville Park has an extensive community garden with 137 plots. Near Bernel Road Park is the Nittany Valley Sports Centre, which offers indoor sports for all ages. “They have a whole bunch of kid camps,” says McMaster. “My friend is always taking his kids to ninja camp, gymnastics, all kinds of stuff.”
Sports bars along North Atherton Street
Most shopping and dining are along Atherton Street. Champs Sports Grill is a popular sports bar with two locations, one on Atherton and one downtown. The restaurant serves American diner food and brews. Otto’s Pub & Brewery, another sports bar, offers pub food and craft beer. American Ale House serves upscale diner fare and hand-crafted cocktails outside of Atherton. Every Friday and Saturday, there are live music performances. Groceries are available at Wegmans and Aldi along North Atherton Street.
Commuters use U.S. 322
Patton is car-dependent. Interstate 99 cuts through the area, connecting to Interstate 80, leading to New York. However, most daily commuters use U.S. 322 to reach downtown State College, Mount Nittany Medical Center and Penn State. Bus stops line North Atherton Street for public transportation. State College Regional Airport is 6 miles away.
Local artists sell pieces at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts
Local artists sell and display their wares at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Vibrant banners hang above downtown every July, and colorful booths line the sidewalk, displaying paintings, textiles, photographs and other works. In September, children and families learn more about and interact with local firefighters, police officers and other safety-related organizations at the Children’s Safety Fair. Religious services are held at Park Forest Baptist Church, Nittany Church, Good Shepherd Catholic Church among other in the area.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
