Past and present merge in Paxton

Merging Central Pennsylvania history with a heavy industry and commercial presence, the Paxtang area has a different feel than neighborhoods just west of it, says real estate agent Erniece Campbell of Real Broker LLC, “It’s a more quiet and laid-back atmosphere, not like the hustle and bustle of the city.” It attracts a variety of homeowners – for some, the convenience to nearby jobs is a draw, while for others, living in one of the earliest colonial settlements in the area is a highlight. Major routes run through the neighborhood, offering direct access to downtown Harrisburg and outlying regions, while within Paxtang the retail options make running quick errands easy for day-to-day life.

Shopping malls and local bites

Harrisburg Mall provides a centralized location for big box retailers and national chain restaurants and is anchored by Bass Pro Shops. However, local options like City Line Diner have been serving the community for decades, with all-day breakfast and that hometown vibe. Reflecting the mixing of cultures that defines the changing community, Bhojan Ghar doles out Nepali and Indian cuisine in a brightly- decorated shop. Below the Beltway, Underdog Sports Bar and Grill is the neighborhood joint for lively game days and trivia nights, serving up pub grub like unique burger builds and wings with house-made rubs and sauces. Just outside of the neighborhood, The Point Shopping Center and Union Square Shopping Center bring grocery stores like Price Rite and Giant together with Lowe’s and other national retailers to make errands easier to run.

Major routes make Paxtang convenient

Derry Street, Paxton Street, and Route 83 run through the heart of Paxtang, and offer direct routes into Harrisburg and around the region. However, during rush hour these routes can turn into parking lots and regularly feature on radio traffic updates. On the bright side, numerous Capital Area Transit (CAT) bus routes run through the neighborhood, and the region is fairly walkable and bikeable. UPMC Harrisburg provides 24-hour emergency care and jobs, roughly 4 miles away. Harrisburg International Airport, 9 miles away, offers service throughout the country with one-stop flights to international locations.

Parks for events, for play, and for exploring the capital region

“People in Paxtang take pride and ownership in their town,” Campbell says, and it’s common to see residents out maintaining their parks. Saussaman Park is home to a shady playground and a big pavilion, and a center for much of the town’s activities. Along Spring Creek, Donald R. Taylor Memorial Park has a tennis court available, a sand volleyball court and baseball fields that host the neighborhood baseball association. Capital Area Greenbelt, accessible from Derry Street, offers 20 miles of walking and biking through the green spaces that surround Harrisburg, with picnic area for stops along the way.

Housing variety spanning centuries

Paxtang is full of charming older homes dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s as well as more modern properties. Elaborate Victorian-style homes, classic American Foursquares, cozy single-floor Craftsman single-family homes and traditional row homes and duplexes are common across the steep, hilly streets surrounded by an abundance of greenery. Every home comes with a modest lawn, with many of them featuring fences or hedges to provide a touch of privacy. On-street parking is common, although some come with driveways or parking off the narrow alleys that weave through town. Most homes sell in the range of $125,000 to $250,000, with larger estates with over 3,000 square feet of livable space can fetch above $300,000.

Three different school districts serve the community

Students in Paxtang may attend one of three districts. Those in the Harrisburg City schools may attend Melrose Elementary, then move up to Marshall Math Science Academy, both of which get a C-minus from Niche. Harrisburg High School, which offers a U.S. Navy Junior ROTC program, also receives a C-minus. Other students may attend the Central Dauphin School District and start out at Paxtang Elementary School, which earns a B-minus from Niche, before going to Swatara Middle School, which receives a C-plus. They can wrap up schooling at Central Dauphin East Senior High School, a B-plus school with a strong music program. In the northern portion of the neighborhood, students may instead attend the Susquehanna Township School District, which features a linear progression through two elementary schools – first Sara Lindemuth, then Thomas Holtzman. From there, they move up to Susquehanna Township Middle School followed by Susquehanna Township High School, all receiving a grade of C or above. Susquehanna Township’s athletic teams are regularly competitive, with a Division AA Swimming and Diving program for both boys and girls.

Close-knit neighborhood shows pride during events

“Paxtang residents participate a lot and decorate their homes during holidays and events,” says Campbell. Saussaman Park is where the community gathers for a lot of the town’s events enjoy movies under the stars, Easter-egg hunts and the annual Patriot Dash, a popular 5K race that supports the Paxtang Lions, a local club that started in 1953 to support efforts for the Paxtang community. On Sundays, some residents may attend Paxtang Presbyterian Church the oldest active Presbyterian Church building in Pennsylvania, featuring original stonework from 1740.

Convenient travel brings the noise of traffic

With Route 83 running through the heart of the neighborhood, and heavy industrial and commercial traffic, Paxtang can be quite noisy, particularly between Derry and Paxton streets. On the flip side, much of this traffic is due to the sheer number of jobs within the neighborhood, as well as its convenience to downtown Harrisburg, only 3 miles or so by any of the major thoroughfares.
