Progress/Colonial Park
Suburban Neighborhood in Penbrook, Pennsylvania
Dauphin County 17109, 17110
A mix of small traditional homes and newer construction
Starting in the Progress section from the Pennbrook neighborhood, homes are more densely clustered in the fashion of early 20th-century suburbs arranged in a typical grid pattern. Small ranch and cottage styles and Cape Cods are common here, typically sporting traditional details and brick exteriors and ranging between $200,000 to $300,000. Duplex townhouses start at $170,000. In the Colonial Park area, residential lots in more contemporary housing developments become slightly larger and more dynamic, with looping roads and leafy tracts of undisturbed woods. The newly constructed homes feature New Traditional and farmhouse-inspired styles, fetching up to $800,000 for builds with over 3,000 square feet.Recreation and history at local parks
Green spaces break up the residential and commercial areas in Colonial Park and Progress. Brightbill Park sits next to the Paxton Towne and Harrisburg East Shopping Centers, providing a community pavilion, playground and sporting facilities on its 41 acres. Tennis courts, basketball courts and a baseball diamond are found here. Another recreational hotspot is Veterans Park in Progress, which features a fitness court, additional tennis and basketball courts, a soccer field and a playground. The nearby Reservoir Park in Penbrook offers a more educational experience. Though the park also offers outdoor recreation, it is home to The National Civil War Museum, a Smithsonian-affiliated museum featuring Civil War artifacts that hosts reenactment events and engaging public programs. Other community-focused events also take place at Reservoir Park. Namely, the annual Fourth of July celebration is held at the park’s Dauphin County Heroes Grove Amphitheater. The festivities include a family-friendly picnic, crafts, and games. Locals browse the dozens of craft vendors and food trucks during the event while watching colonial-era reenactors perform for the crowd. Two school districts
Students in Progress and Colonial Park are divided into the Central Dauphin and Susquehanna Township school districts. In Colonial Park, students may start at B-graded North Side Elementary School before advancing to Central Dauphin Middle School, which earns a C-plus. Central Dauphin East Senior High School maintains a B-plus score. On the other side of the community, kids attend B-rated Sara Lindemuth Elementary School and C-rated Susquehanna Middle School before finishing at Susquehanna Township High School, earning a B-minus.Along two major thoroughfares
Both communities are anchored by Interstate 83 and Route 22, which connect between Colonial Park and Progress. Residents take these thoroughfares to link to Downtown Harrisburg, Interstate 81, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. While most folks drive, commuters can also rely on the handful of bus stations strewn throughout the communities. Progress and Colonial Park are also only 10 miles away from the Harrisburg International Airport.Franchise restaurants and familiar retail names
The interstate corridors are packed with various eateries and shopping centers. “You’ll sometimes have to wait a while at red lights around rush hour, but you get a lot of conveniences close to home,” Domiciano says. A cluster of franchise restaurants and familiar retail stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target and Costco are located at the edge of Colonial Park, making up the Paxton Towne Center and Harrisburg East Shopping Center. Down the street, Colonial Park Mall is home to specialty stores and Boscov’s Department Store. Off Interstate 83 in Progress, grocery stores like Giant and Weis Markets and additional discount and clothing stores, including Burlington, are located within the Dauphin Plaza and Union Square Shopping Center. Fast food chains and casual eateries dot these shopping centers, with options including LongHorn Steakhouse, Red Lobster and Panera. For more local dining experiences, residents head to Gabriella Italian Restaurant to enjoy authentic Italian dishes or order surf ‘n’ turf alongside cocktails at Progress Grill.
