Penfield, New York, founded in 1810, is a neighborhood that is part of the Rochester suburbs. Historically, Penfield was a thriving mill town. In fact, the remnants of the Daisy Flour Mill, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, still stands today. Now, the Rising Storm Brewing Company at The Mill, one of the newer additions to the restaurant scene, occupies the historic site. Presently, Penfield is a picturesque community for those who commute to Rochester. “It’s a well-established neighborhood full of mature trees and lush landscaping,” says Jennifer Olas, a Realtor with 16 years of experience selling homes in the community. “Penfield looks like something in a magazine. And it’s a great spot to get to other towns in the region — it’s centrally located.”
More than 70 miles of trails and sidewalks
Olas says housing styles in Penfield are predominantly colonial homes and ranch houses. Prices for homes in the community range from $180,000 to $821,000 and lot sizes for most homes are 20,037 square feet. Several homes were built between 1960 and 1990. The community is connected by over 70 miles of sidewalks and trails linking schools, parks and community facilities.

Schools post high proficiency marks
Kids in the neighborhood can attend schools in the Penfield Central School District, which is rated A by Niche. Nearly 80% of students in the district are proficient in math and reading. Cobbles Elementary School, also ranked A by Niche, has a 13-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Bay Trail Middle School is also ranked A by Niche. Penfield Senior High School has 25 different clubs for students and has an A-minus grade from Niche. The University of Rochester and St. John Fisher University are two of the seven universities near Penfield.
Wayne Senior High School serves 664 students in grades 9-12.
Wayne Central Middle School serves 627 students in grades 5-8.

Dinosaur-themed park and large wetlands highlight parks
There are more than ten parks in Penfield. Jack’s Place, the 8,000-square-foot dinosaur-themed park is dedicated to Jack Heiligman, a 3-year-old boy who died in a tragic lawnmower accident. Jack’s Place is located in the heart of the 70-acre Rothfuss Park. This green space has four full-sized athletic fields and a QR-fit trail. Thousand Acre Swamp is one of the largest wetlands in the community and offers boardwalks and paths to follow and observe local wildlife. The park is also open to bow hunters during hunting season. Shadow Pines is an 18-hole disc golf course formally called the Shadow Pines Golf Course. The course opened in 2022. Local mall is a one-stop shop
Panorama Plaza is the local one-stop mall located on Penfield Road for everything from groceries to pharmacies and clothing. In addition, the mall has more than a dozen eateries ranging from Italian, comfort food and bagels. The corridor Panorama Plaza is located in is a shopping hub with big box stores and fast food locations.
Hosptial dating back to 1847 continues to serve community
Residents seeking medical care have more than 15 options in the surrounding area, including Rochester General Hospital. The hospital dates back to 1847 and has over 500 beds.
