Penn Hills, only 12 miles from Pittsburgh, has a strong community among its vast stretches of open green space. The Penn Hills Community Development Corporation brings residents together through projects such as planting, mowing and removing litter in small gardens around the municipality. The organization also supports the planting of milkweed to encourage the growth of migrating monarch butterflies. The Penn Hills Public Library hosts a Community Fridge that offers residents fresh vegetables, milk, eggs and other nutritious foods. The Parks and Recreation Department has summer camps for kids, a Memorial Day parade and movies at Penn Hills Community Park. “It’s an area that’s beginning to revitalize a little bit,” says Adam Slivka, real estate agent at CENTURY 21 Fairways Real Estate.
