Originally founded as a resort town, Downtown Perth Amboy is a bustling city center with shopping and dining, access to popular New Jersey Transit lines, and industrial sites along the riverfront. Downtown provides quick, walkable access to stores and restaurants. The area is 20 miles south of Manhattan, but it comes with its own array of attractions, making Downtown Perth Amboy a popular choice for working commuters.
Shopping and dining along Smith Street
Chain stores, local shops and restaurants line downtown’s Smith Street. Quisqueya Meat Market & Grocery has fresh produce and pre-packaged goods. For larger grocery runs, Supremo Food Market is on King Street. “There are so many eateries that people aren’t aware of,” says Yolanda Flores, a Realtor with Keller Williams by the Bay, who’s been selling homes in the area since 2014. “If you’re looking for little Latin spots to eat at, we have several.” Don Manuel, Mi Tierra, Cuban Cafe and La Hacienda Restaurant are some of the more popular options. Just east of downtown is The Armory, an upscale seafood restaurant along the waterfront.
From vibrant Latin restaurants like Mi Tiera to fresh groceries, Downtown Perth Amboy has it all right at your doorstep.

Close to renovated train station, Garden State Parkway
Downtown Perth Amboy’s wide sidewalks, compact design and proximity to shops make it easy for residents to walk to their destinations, like one of the many churches nearby. The Perth Amboy Station is west of downtown, running from the Jersey Shore to Penn Station in Manhattan. “The train station is actually being redone,” Flores says. “The city received a grant, and they’ve already broken ground.” Renovations to the station are expected to be completed by summer 2025. Anyone commuting by car can take Outerbridge Crossing to Staten Island or Garden State Parkway to South Jersey. HMH Raritan Bay Medical Center, the closest hospital, is just a mile west. Newark Liberty International Airport is 14 miles north.
Waterfront walkway, marina with bay access
With its coastal location, recreation on the water is a common pastime in the city. Just east of downtown, there’s a waterfront walkway that goes past the Perth Amboy Harborside Marina, where locals dock their boats or launch out onto the Raritan Bay. A half mile south, Sadowski Parkway Waterfront Park has a sandy coastline, and the High Street Municipal Pier is a popular fishing spot.
