A quiet neighborhood in a changing city
Near the outskirts of Perth Amboy, Maurer is a small residential pocket of homes surrounded by industrial warehouses. Despite this, it’s a quiet neighborhood where homes sit close together and sidewalks line both sides of the street. With state Route 440 and the rest of the city to the south, Maurer is close to major highways but a little farther from shopping and dining in downtown Perth Amboy or around the waterfront. “Perth Amboy in general is attractive because it’s a small community close to New York City, close to Staten Island,” says Carmen Almanzar, a broker associate with Fox & Foxx Realty who has sold homes in Perth Amboy for 23 years. “I lived in Perth Amboy for over 20 years, so I know that you have everything convenient. Your bus stop, your train station, all the different bodegas, the neighborhood stores where you can buy anything without leaving town.” Almanzar says Perth Amboy is growing and has planned improvement projects like the $200 million cleanup of abandoned industrial sites along the waterfront. Luxury rental units are planned for that space. That's just one sign of the city’s recent growth. “We’re seeing a lot more people coming from out of town and, of course, everything is changing, like happens in every little town that starts growing and growing and expanding,” Almanzar says, adding that Perth Amboy has taken on more of a city-like vibe in recent years. Maurer’s location on the city’s outskirts give it the best of both worlds; it’s a short drive to these improvements, but removed enough from the rest of Perth Amboy to still have a slower, quieter atmosphere.

Small homes starting at about $300,000
Maurer’s houses are often smaller Cape Cods and bungalows, with just a handful of colonials or new traditionals thrown in. Because they’re often close together, these homes have smaller yards. Most have small driveways, but not all — some homes rely exclusively on street parking. Enrique Hernandez, the broker and owner of Petra Best Realty, says home prices in Perth Amboy have risen in recent years. In Maurer, small homes in need of updates start at around $300,000, and more updated houses can climb to around $550,000. Its handful of condominiums typically cost between $200,000 and $450,000.

Career prep through electives at Perth Amboy High
The Perth Amboy Public School District gets a C from Niche. Children can attend Edward J. Patten Elementary School, which has a C, from kindergarten through fourth grade and Samuel E. Shull Middle School, which has a C-minus, from fifth through eighth grade. They then attend Perth Amboy High School, which has a C-plus. Perth Amboy High allows students to pick electives from one of three themed academies. Comprehensive High School covers a wide range of disciplines, Health Sciences Academy narrows the scope to prepare students for careers in the medical field and Communications Academy offers courses in fields like journalism, audio and video production and design.

Nearby highways, commuting options to New York City
State Routes 35 and 440 run along the edges of Maurer, providing easy interstate access. It takes just a few minutes to reach Interstate 95, and the 32-mile trip to Manhattan takes about 50 minutes in low traffic. “What draws people to this area is close proximity to New York City,” Hernandez says, stressing that residents can get there by car or train, as there are stops on the commuter rail in both Perth Amboy’s downtown and nearby Woodbridge. Both stations are about 3 miles from Maurer. There’s also a ferry about 7 miles away in South Amboy. Bus stops line Amboy Avenue, and Hackensack Meridian Raritan Bay Medical Center is 2 miles away.
Smaller parks close to home, a few miles to the Raritan Bay
Within walking distance of many Maurer homes, Francis Street Park is a pocket park with playground and basketball court. Rudyk Park offers fields for sports like soccer, football and baseball alongside its playground and basketball courts. Just under 2 miles away, William Warren Park is a 126-acre green space with wooded walking trails and abundant athletic fields and courts. Perth Amboy’s waterfront is also a popular aspect of life during the warm months. Residents head to marinas or areas like Sadowski Parkway Waterfront Park about 3 miles away for boating, sailing and fishing in Raritan River or Raritan Bay.

A short drive to most shopping and dining
Most of Maurer is either residential or industrial, so there are few restaurants or shops in the neighborhood. There’s a Wendy’s along Route 35, and driving less than a mile north leads residents to Strawberry’s Pub & Pizza. One of the area’s most popular restaurants, it’s known for thin-crust pizza and wings with beer on tap. Most shopping and dining, though, is found in Perth Amboy’s downtown less than 3 miles away. The walkable downtown has a mixture of recognizable stores and locally owned shops and restaurants. Although there are little bodegas like Torres Mini Market closer to home, the nearest ShopRite is about 3 miles away.

Cultural parades, summer concert series
Perth Amboy hosts several big celebrations and parades throughout the year. “It seems like every community has their days,” Almanzar says. “We have the Puerto Rican parade, the Dominican, the Peruvian parade. There’s May 5th, that’s a Mexican holiday, but it’s also celebrated throughout the area.” The Puerto Rican Parade is often hosted in Rudyk Park, featuring carnival rides, live music, food and a beer garden. Hernandez says the city also hosts a free summer concert series with performances at several waterfront parks.
Chance of hurricanes, but low risk of flooding
Despite being near a waterfront, Maurer itself isn’t on the water. Although hurricanes or tropical storms occasionally pass over the area, First Street, a climate risk data organization, says there’s only a minor risk of flooding. These storms do bring a major risk of high winds, but they don’t happen every year.
